MacEwan University is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as the next Associate Vice-President, Student Support and Accountability.

Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, the Associate Vice-President provides strategic and operational leadership for a diverse range of student support services, enhancing student access, wellness, and accountability. The Associate Vice-President will lead a team of over 40 (with three direct reports) in the areas of Student Wellness Services, the Exam Centre, Student Conduct and Academic Integrity, Access and Disability Resources, and Wellness and Psychological Services.

The Associate Vice-President, Student Support and Accountability oversees the planning, development, organization, and administration of student support policies and services, ensuring effective communication between student support areas and the broader University.

This position also ensures appropriate policies and frameworks are in place to assess, support, and resolve student behavioural and academic conduct. This keystone role requires imagination, innovation, and creativity to build a sense of belonging and community, enabling students to thrive both inside and outside the campus environment.

The Associate Vice-President will provide executive-level oversight, including personnel decisions and budget preparation, for the University's broad range of health, wellness, and accountability initiatives.

Strategic Planning and Operational Leadership

  • Provide tactical, financial, and operational leadership to the Student Support and Accountability department, ensuring alignment with university priorities.
  • Lead the development of short-, mid-, and long-term plans to support MacEwan’s growth goals for 2030.
  • Develop and manage the annual operating budget in consultation with the Provost, addressing emerging issues as needed.
  • Oversee departmental strategies that enhance the University’s brand and contribute to student attraction and retention.
  • Ensure financial viability, risk management, and resource stewardship of the department.
  • Drive change initiatives to optimize service levels and resource allocation based on established priorities.
  • Set performance objectives for direct reports, monitor progress and take appropriate action when needed to support success.

Program and Services Leadership

  • Identify opportunities for program and service enhancements and lead their implementation.
  • Oversee the growth and management of critical student support services, including :
  • Student Wellness Services : Accessibility assistive technology services, deaf services, student crisis support, and intervention.
  • Access and Disability Resources : Assess student needs and provide accommodation.
  • Wellness and Psychological Services : Offer free, confidential counselling.
  • Student Conduct : Investigate and resolve behavioural misconduct, ensuring compliance with university policies.
  • Academic Integrity : Collaborate with faculty and students to assess and resolve academic misconduct.
  • Exam Centre : Deliver testing services and accommodations, administering around 10,000 exams annually.
  • Ensure clear communication within the leadership team and staff, maintaining an effective organizational structure.
  • Foster partnerships across the university to enhance the student experience.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders to align student-focused initiatives with broader university goals.
  • Lead and participate in committees related to Student Support and Accountability.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders to stay informed on trends, opportunities, and engagement initiatives.
  • Management and People Leadership

  • Build and lead a team committed to the University’s vision, goals, and priorities.
  • Develop departmental organization and support recruitment, training, and motivation.
  • Embody and cascade values of integrity, transparency, trust, and accountability.
  • Manage direct reports by assigning workloads and responding to emerging issues.
  • Mentor and develop staff through supportive performance management.
  • Ensure systems and controls are in place to maintain compliance with legislation and best practices.
  • Lead Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) program implementation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications and Education Requirements

    The successful candidate will have, at minimum, relevant graduate credentials and a strong track record of leadership experience managing student services in a post-secondary environment. The individual will also have significant experience leading multi-disciplinary teams to achieve a common vision and outstanding student experience.
