Electrical Engineer / Designer - Setting and Studies
Role
Reporting to a Senior Engineer, the Settings & Studies Engineer designs protection and control schemes for electrical facilities across Transmission & Distribution, Power generation, Industrial, and Renewables sectors. The Engineer applies knowledge and experience to analyze, evaluate, and create new designs and drawings, and revises existing ones with guidance from senior engineering personnel.
Responsibilities
- Familiar with Protection and Control philosophies, schemes, and standards
- Apply knowledge of components, arrangements, and standards to complete design packages for substations, including schematics, wiring diagrams, and bills of materials
- Working knowledge of MathCAD, Microsoft Office, Aspen Oneliner, and CAPE
- Excellent knowledge of modern digital protective relays and experience calculating relay settings
- Technical knowledge of electric transmission system operation, maintenance, performance, power equipment, and substation design
- Familiarity with Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) rules is an asset
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Provide technical support during construction and commissioning
- Competent in basic computer skills including Microstation, AutoCAD, Trane Software, and Microsoft Office products
- Good knowledge of relevant legislations, standards, regulations, guides, and good practice (CSA, ANSI, IEC, IEEE)
- Familiarity with local area networks, communication schemes, platforms, and protocols used for local and remote interrogation with substation relays, meters, fault recorders, and IEDs (knowledge of IEC61850)
- Experience in design of electrical facilities for Transmission & Distribution, Power generation, Industrial, and Renewables sector
Qualifications
Degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering degree required; or Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited post‑secondary institution2–8 years of experience in the Utilities industry preferred but not requiredPreference for candidates with prior engineering experience in electrical facilities for Transmission & Distribution, Power generation, Industrial, and Renewables sectorsExperience in construction and field installations is an assetProficient in medium / high voltage power engineering in the aforementioned sectorsAbility to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematicsStrong organizational, analytical, troubleshooting, problem‑solving, and communication skillsEligible for registration with APEGGA or ASETDedicated team playerBenefits
