About McElhanney

Based in Western Canada for over 110 years, McElhanney offers innovative and practical engineering, surveying, mapping, planning, landscape architecture, and environmental services. As a 100% employee-owned and operated firm, with over 1,400 staff members in 33 locations, we are proud to offer qualified staff with shareholding options in our company. At McElhanney, we work in teams to build strong connections with our staff, clients, and local communities. Our employees enjoy working here because of our varied projects, high levels of autonomy, opportunities for career development, excellent total compensation and benefits package, and collaborating with a team of great professionals.

The Opportunity

McElhanney is seeking a motivated junior / intermediate designer to join our municipal engineering team in Langley, BC. This is an exciting opportunity to build design expertise across a wide variety of projects from land development and utilities design to road improvements and master planning. This is a role that will require flexibility in the types of designs being completed as you work on projects ranging from grading and servicing plans to downtown revitalizations and large utilities and roadworks projects for municipalities.

At McElhanney, culture is the key to our success. We seek people who excel in an environment where teamwork, excellence, and respect are a priority. If you are looking for an opportunity to further your engineering skills, while contributing to the growth of our branch services, this may be the role for you. Whether it’s mentorship from industry-leading professionals or access to diverse projects, McElhanney has the resources of a big firm but the heart of a small one.

What You’ll Do

  • Work from preliminary concepts and sketches to produce detailed engineering designs, plans and project informational requirements, using primarily AutoCAD / Civil 3D. Project types include water, wastewater, and stormwater projects, and other underground utility improvements as well as roadworks improvements.
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team to deliver high-quality projects on time and budget.
  • Support the continuous improvement of our design workflows by contributing to standards and best-practice development.
  • Coordinate and assist in the preparation of documents required for approvals, prepare development and construction cost estimates, tender documents and contracts, and coordinate with other team members to ensure schedules, budgets and quality control standards are achieved.
  • Complete field inspections to monitor the quality and progress of the work being performed.

What You’ll Bring

  • A two-year post-secondary diploma in Civil Engineering or a Civil Engineering degree from an accredited university with strong technical skills
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil3D, with an emphasis on municipal engineering projects, utilities and servicing projects, and site grading
  • Familiarity with regional municipal design standards is an asset
  • Knowledge of MMCD and Construction Administration experience is an asset
  • Good verbal and written communication skills are a must
  • 1-5 years of experience in supporting design projects
  • What Can We Offer You?

  • Comprehensive Benefits : Maternity and parental leave top up program, health and dental coverage, RRSP matching, and Employee & Family Assistance Program.
  • Safe & Inclusive Workplace : A culture of respect and inclusion for all.
  • Compensation : Attractive total compensation package including a generous bonus plan and share ownership potential
