The Sooke / Westshore Literacy Task Group is seeking a part-time Literacy Outreach Coordinator (LOC) to provide leadership in building, coordinating and enhancing literacy services, programs and networks within the Westshore and Sooke Regions. This is a contract position funded by Decoda Literacy Solutions and the EMCS Society is the project steward. The position is supervised by the EMCS Community School Coordinator and reports to the EMCS Society Board of Directors. The LOC will organize, schedule, and work in tandem with the Sooke & Westshore Literacy Task Group to help build the community’s capacity to deliver and sustain local literacy programs and services.
The LOC will :
- Facilitate and support the community literacy task group to set strategic direction, including reviewing and updating community literacy plans and providing data for the annual report.
- Promote and support community groups engaged in the provision of literacy programs and services.
- Work with groups and individuals to help create new or enhanced literacy programs and services in keeping with the goals of the community literacy plan.
- Work both jointly and independently with the communities of Westshore and Sooke.
- Encourage community representation, participation and leadership for literacy.
- assist service providers and community members to create collaborative and integrated services.
- Participate in various community planning and advisory meetings, bringing an understanding about the relationship of literacy to various community concerns.
- Participating in evaluation and measurement strategies for literacy work.
- Act as a liaison at the provincial and community levels to ensure that literacy initiatives align with broader national, provincial, and regional priorities.
- Identify sources of funding and apply for funds as appropriate.
- Actively monitor and refill book bins and keep book storage organized.
- Actively maintain an online presence for the Sooke / Westshore Region via a website and social media accounts.
The preferred candidate will have :
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in community-based literacy programsRelevant post-secondary degree or an equivalent combination of training and experienceExperience in community development, partnerships, and researchStrong consultation, communication and presentation skills, especially in managing a meeting and producing post meeting notes.Demonstrated time-management and priority-setting skillsDemonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently and produce deliverablesAbility to work collaboratively with diverse views and within cross-cultural contexts
Proven ability to organize and market events,Understand, manage, and develop projects & budgetsComputer software competence-including website maintenance, social media promotion, online communication and researchValid BC driver’s license and willingness to travel with own vehicle as necessaryWillingness to acquire local knowledge of the demographics and the literacy needs of our regionCriminal record checkCompensation : This is a part-time, 12-month contract position, and employee of the EMCS Society. The successful candidate will be expected to work up to 20 hours per week at $27.00 per hour. The position may require working some evenings and weekends, as well as traveling throughout the area (mileage compensation available).
