About the Opportunity
Cardiovascular Health Nova Scotia's (CVHNS's) mission is improving cardiovascular health and care of Nova Scotians with a particular focus on acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, transient ischemic attack and stroke. CVHNS's mandate spans the continuum of care and includes development and dissemination of provincial standards and service delivery models, knowledge translation, monitoring and surveillance of process and outcomes of cardiovascular care, and partnerships to improve local health and care.
Reporting to and under the direction of the Manager, Health Information Services, Coding & Abstracting and / or designate, the CVHNS Abstractor / Health Record Technician is responsible for the accurate identification, interpretation and recording of data from inpatient charts with appropriate cardiovascular diagnoses. These data form the basis for provincial monitoring and surveillance of cardiovascular disease. The Health Record Technician reviews and interprets clinical documentation and collects data using criteria and guidelines outlined in the CVHNS Abstracting Manual, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the data collected and maintaining confidentiality and security of patient information.
About You
We would love to hear from you if you have the following :
- Successful completion of a 2-3 year diploma from a recognized Canada Health Information Management Association recognized program ( hours)
- Certified with the Canadian College of Health Information Management & hold active certified membership in good standing with Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA)
- Knowledge of National & Provincial legislation and NSHA / Area policies that govern Confidentiality, Privacy, and security of health information and demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality
- 2 years of coding experience in the health information management field preferred
- Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development including completion of 36 continuing education credits every three years post-graduation
- Current knowledge of data collection standard including Canadian Institute of Health Information standards (i.e. Discharge Abstract Database, National Ambulatory Care Reporting System, Management Information System)
- Knowledge of health information systems (3M, Discharge Abstract Database, National Ambulatory Reporting system, & ADT system (MEDITECH / STAR)
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills and good judgement
- Demonstrated attention to detail
- Demonstrated communication, interpersonal, collaboration and teamwork skills
- Demonstrated accountability, initiative and ability to work independently
- Demonstrated planning, organizing, prioritizing and time management skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs- Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Lync & Outlook calendar
- Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
- A coding skills test will be administered as part of the selection process

$29.44 - 31.57 Hourly
