Job Description
Recreationist contributes to recreation planning and conducts recreation activities with groups at the Day Centre. The Recreationist also organizes and promotes both research and evidence-based programs while taking into account the needs and interests of the clients.
We are looking for : a full-time, permanent Recreationist Salary : Commensurate with experience. Hours of Work : 34 hours / week. This role is based at our Adult Day Program in Maple. Wednesday 11 : 00 am - 7 : 00 pm, Thursday 8 : 30 am - 4 : 30 pm, Friday 8 : 30 am - 3 : 30 pm, and Saturday and Sunday 8 : 30 am - 4 : 30 pm. Reports to : Supervisor, Adult Day Program
Responsibilities
Recreation Facilities
- Ensures that Day Centre facilities are operated and maintained effectively and safely
- Assists in the preparation and development of the monthly calendars / letters
- Ensures policies and regulations are adhered to
- Monitors the use of recreation equipment and facilities
- Works effectively with all staff at the Day Centre to ensure the safety and well-being of the clients
Recreation Programs Development
Responsible for the research, development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based programs for clients at the Day CentrePerforms ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of programs, and adjusts program areas as neededResponsible for scheduling programs, entertainment, students and volunteers as requiredResponsible for orientation and supervision of volunteers and students as neededInventory Control and Related Duties
Responsible for overseeing the purchase, planning, design, construction and upkeep of recreation facilities and areasExplains principles, techniques and safety procedures to participants in recreational activities and demonstrates use of materials and equipmentTeam Building and Leadership

Identifying and reporting health and safety incidents and concerns in a timely manner to the appropriate supervisors and / or funders, documenting incidents in EasyCare and escalating appropriately to the designated supervisors as outlined in the Client Safety Reporting policy (C.01.38).Participating in health and safety processes and proceduresParticipating in maintaining a safe workplace environment by cultivating a positive safety culture and encouraging best practices to promote both staff and client safety and well-beingParticipating in all health and safety training initiatives on a regular basis.Taking proactive action against client incidents within your scope of practice.Developing a plan to identify, manage and / or minimize client safety risks or situations in adherence with risk management operations policiesAssessing the severity of an adverse client safety / risk event and determining the best follow-up and developing an action plan following the event. Collaborating with funder (ex. HCCSS) and following any additional processes as required.Calling emergency services (911) when the client is at an immediate risk of harming themselves or others, or if there is a serious injury and / or imminent harm.Evaluating any potential hazards and identifying clients at risk for adverse health and safety events, taking preventative measures when necessary to minimize reoccurrence.Reporting all safety events impacting clients, caregivers and families in a timely and honest disclosure.Qualifications
A degree in Recreation Therapy or completion of two (2) years community college in Recreation TherapyDemonstrates sound work ethics and dedicationProfessional member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO)Basic Cardiac Life Support CertifiedU-First training an assetExperience working with frail and impaired elderly and their familiesExperience working with seniors who have Alzheimer’s disease and dementiaExperience in recreational programming for seniors.Intermediate computer and writing skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.Clear communication skills.Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team.Current CPR training would be an assetAble to work occasional evenings on a rotational basis
