The opportunity
This role is key in harnessing the connective power of content to help readers, patients and caregivers navigate healthy lifestyle, prevention, and recovery.
Working within the dynamic content team under Marketing Strategy, Digital and Communications, this role provides oversight for Heart & Stroke's Health Information (HI) portfolio, which is a key element of the Heart & Stroke content strategy.
The HI portfolio consists of public-facing health content developed for our website and other channels to :
- 1) Help people in Canada understand heart disease, stroke and related conditions;
- 2) help those living with heart disease or stroke (patients and caregivers) better understand and manage their condition;
3) educate and inspire Canadians to take action to improve their health and that of their loved ones.
Working closely with the Senior Editor, Content, and collaborating with internal teams and subject matter experts, this role leverages expertise in health communications, knowledge translation and digital media to lead planning, development and maintenance of digital-first content that is evidence-based, current, engaging and accessible.
The role will also oversee the creation, updating and management of our health-based print resources.
Occasionally the role is expected to travel to the Toronto office; when doing so any travel expenses incurred are not eligible for reimbursement.)
How you will make an impact every day
Manage Health Information (HI) portfolio planning and oversight
- Collaborate with internal teams to lead planning and prioritization of HI projects.
- Recommend an annual project plan for the HI portfolio.
- Suggest HI innovations to align with the overall Heart & Stroke content strategy and constantly seek to improve Heart & Stroke health information quality and meet KPIs.
- Support the Senior Editor, Content with annual budgeting process.
- Provide input on industry best practices including key health communication and health promotion concepts such as plain language, behavior change, chronic disease.

- Support requests from fundraising and development teams for HI related opportunities or revenue growth, including development of proposals and identify measures of success.
- Work with Senior Editor, Content and other business units to deepen digital relationships using HI content as appropriate.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to plan and manage the evolution of Heart & Stroke print products.
Coordinate HI content development, project planning and management
- Oversee implementation of HI projects, providing clear communication with internal and external partners and stakeholders, project documentation, ongoing status updates, and contingency plans / course correction as required.
- Oversee product quality, collaborating with internal teams and subject matter experts to ensure content is current and in line with published guidelines, Heart & Stroke content strategy and style guide.
- Create and manage content partnerships to use partner content as appropriate.
- Implement tracking of agreed evaluation criteria and user feedback as appropriate.
- Work with the Senior Editor, Content to fulfill identified partnership opportunities while ensuring all terms and conditions are met.
- Identify and manage qualified content contributors (freelance, internal, etc.).
- Assign and edit HI content projects as required, collaborating with internal teams to prepare for publication.
- Identify opportunities to delegate tasks to other content team members (plus volunteers or co-op students when appropriate);
provide clear direction and oversight.
- Adhere to project budgets (establishing, tracking, reporting) for HI content projects.
- Respond to HI-related enquiries from the public.
Who we need
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the development, management and dissemination of health information and health communication and / or patient education in a digital-first environment.
- Expertise related to patients, plain language principles. self-management, chronic disease management and behaviour change.
- Experience working with knowledge translation (KT) specialists an asset.
- Project management experience.
- Experience managing stakeholders and vendors in a multi-channel digital content environment.
Education
Post-secondary education in related area of study (e.g. writing / editing, communications, journalism, information management) with a focus / interest in digital-first consumer health information in a multi-channel environment.
Skills
- Proficiency using MS Office products.
- Familiarity with basic project management software and tools.
- High level of detail and accuracy.
- Able to effectively manage and deliver to deadlines within a fast-paced environment involving multi-tasking.
- Proven ability in project prioritization.
- Able to take direction and work independently.
- Able to delegate tasks to other team members, providing clear direction and oversight.
- A team player with excellent communication skills (verbal & written).
