Duties & Responsibilities

The Senior Administrator, Payroll works closely with an incumbent Administrator, Payroll as part of the Payroll & Benefits team. The team is responsible for the complete processing of assigned hourly and salaried payrolls using Avanti payroll management software and for the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP), Workers Compensation Board (WCB) payments and reconciliations, and all other employee benefits (extended health, dental, ADD, travel insurance, life insurance, etc.). The Senior Administrator also compiles and reviews payroll information for monthly reconciliations, annual reporting and audit support. This role is not a remote or hybrid opportunity; you will be required to work on campus and relocate to Fort McMurray, AB.

Core Accountabilities

• Ensure compliance with all federal, provincial, and other applicable legislation as well as union and association agreements.
• Collect, calculate, and enter payroll data; ensure timely, accurate, and compliant pay runs including updating payroll records, review, and approval of changes to the system.
• Balance the payroll accounts and resolve any discrepancies, including preparation and delivery of relevant reports to leaders, auditors and Finance.
• Generate, run, reconcile and balance reports and related remittances covering payroll, pension, government programs, benefit carriers, and year‑end reconciliation validation and submission, including vacation accruals, ROEs, CRA, WCB and T4s.
• Process payroll cycles and related pay adjustments via Avanti Payroll System.
• Process new hires, terminations, and all other personnel changes and prepare employee letters as required.
• Act as a liaison for all payroll‑related inquiries to both internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s University degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or Human Resources.
• Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation required; Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) designation or in progress is considered an asset.
• Minimum of 5 years direct payroll, benefits and pension management experience.
• Knowledge of payroll, benefit, pension and accommodation requirements and legislation (accounting, provincial, federal).
• Proficiency with preparing journal entries and reconciling all payroll & benefits accounts.
• Intermediate Excel skills and strong command of human resource systems / HRIS.

Nice to Have

• Public sector experience (government, secondary or post‑secondary education sector or municipal sector) preferred but not mandatory.
• Knowledge and experience with the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP) is desired.
• Experience in a municipal or local government environment is an asset.
• Prior experience with AVANTI considered a great asset.
