Description
The HSE / OHS Manage r will ensure a strong safety culture. They will recommend strategic direction and implement plans based on recent safety audit results and will ensure that our policies and programs meet legislated requirements. Reporting directly to the Director of Human Resources \ Safety \ Payroll, the Manager role focuses on delivering HSE / OHS support and guidance to our operational areas in Canada.
Responsibilities will include training employees in safety management best practices, assisting with hazard identification and the development of safe work procedures, identifying, developing and delivering safety training supplements, providing day-to-day guidance and advice. The Safety Manager will also be responsible for providing field support for the safety requirements of significant projects.
Duties / Responsibilities
- Support the organization in the strategic development and communication of HSE initiatives and organizational commitment to OHS.
- Promote a culture of safety awareness and accountability across all levels of the organization.
- Assess current company HSE / OHS programs and implement enhancements and improvements as needed.
- Implement safety practices, policies and plans of the company.
- Provide necessary training, leadership, organization and control to meet the company's goal of zero accidents.
- Lead with accountability and management support to take any necessary action to maintain overall safe practices and procedures, including the authority to cease an unsafe operating procedure.
- Coordinate with regulatory authorities during inspections and audits.
- Managing the overall HSE / OHS technology systems and ensuring the program meets legislative and client requirements and is effectively audited (COR).
- Implement information and communication flow and data publications to ensure each level of management is properly informed of all activities relative to compliance with company safety policies and bulletins.
- Ensure all equipment and buildings owned or operated by the company comply with safety and fire regulations and any other local, Municipal, Provincial or Federal regulations including client-specific requirements.
- Work with the team to analyze root causes of incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Work with the collective team to coach, mentor and teach worker safety monitor performance.
- Observe equipment and property conditions and report discrepancies to appropriate managers.
- Monitor and measure effectiveness of all safety programs and documentation required as part of compliance with National Safety Code.
- Develop a team from within the company to ensure safety and compliance is observed at all levels.
- Develop manuals, policies, and procedures for training and safe work practices to be approved by the Safety Manager and then implemented.
- Oversee the company Safety Management System.
- Conduct accident investigations as necessary to assist with liability determination and causation, including resolution of open claims.
- File requests for accident evaluations, ensuring unpreventable accidents are recorded as such wherever applicable.
- Provide day-to-day support for health, and safety on-site safety programs, procedures, safe work practices, and campaigns.
- Frequent travel will be required.
Managers Safety Responsibilities
Do everything reasonable to ensure the health and safety of the workers under their supervision.Ensure all workers under their direction are adequately trained in the given task, knowledgeable of the with equipment and effectively supervised throughout the job.Maintain cyclical and as required safety tasks as directed by the health and safety program and jurisdictional health and safety legislation.Regularly communicate with employees regarding occupational health and safety, observing performance for compliance to the program.Immediately notify and liaise with the health and safety department regarding OH&S visits, inspection or inquiries and health or safety related incidents.Required Qualifications
Experience in research, analysis, interpretation and implementation of safety regulations, standards, and best practices as they pertain to DXP Canada operationsUnderstand and have complete knowledge of all Federal, Provincial rules and regulations pertaining to safety codes and Occupational Health and Safety rulesDirect experience assessing training needs, creating training materials to fulfill those needs, and then delivering the trainingExcellent at creating high quality presentations using a variety of technologies (e.g. WebEx, Microsoft PowerPoint, LCD projectors, etc.)Advanced written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate with individualsDemonstrated ability to train, coach, evaluate, and improve othersMotivated, energetic, goal-oriented, and positive outlook criticalStrong time management and prioritization skillsStrong problem-solving and analytical skillsStrong sense of professionalism and diplomacyStrong attention to detailAble to build and maintain lasting relationships with other departments, key business partners, and other stakeholdersStrong work ethic, positive team attitude and excellent leadership skillsRequired Certifications & Training
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant fieldCRSP or CHSC designation preferred5-7 years’ experience as a Safety ManagerKnowledge of ISNetworld, Comply-Works, Avetta and relevant safety management systems.Valid unrestricted license with full driving privileges in the province of issue for the specified class of vehicle to be operated on behalf of the company or a higher class of license than that of the vehicle to be operated.Maintain all site-specific orientation and training tickets required to access client sitesWorking knowledge of Workhub would be considered an asset.Drug & Alcohol testing will be required for site specific operations and safety-sensitive roles.Additional training and certifications may be necessary to meet client specificationsWork Location : Role will be based at the DXP Canada head office in Calgary.
Travel : Up to 30% of time will be allocated to visiting DXP Canada work sites.
