Position Purpose Summary
The Community & Family Services Worker assists individuals and families seeking aid and assistance from or referred to The Salvation Army St. Catharines. The role supports holistic programming and special events that meet the needs of clients, while balancing transactional distribution services with relational and transformational ministry in partnership with the St. Catharines Church leadership.
Accountabilities
- Conduct initial intake, screen clients for emergency assistance (food, clothing, household needs, referrals), and document the process.
- Create a safe space for clients and families to explore practical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs.
- Engage in conversation and prayer, sharing the hope and love of Jesus in a way that respects each client’s faith journey.
- Oversee program activities : organize resources, maintain cleanliness, manage donated goods, and process clients through services.
- Assist with new and existing program provisions, ensuring a spiritual dynamic and facilitating access to pastoral services.
- Collaborate with CS staff to promote the St. Catharines Church and Community Service programs within the community, and actively promote these programs to clients.
- Coordinate resources by networking with Salvation Army, government, and community social service providers.
- Participate in community meetings and client referrals as directed by the supervisor.
- Support seasonal programs such as Christmas Hampers, Christmas Kettles, camp and summer backpack programs.
- Refer clients for pastoral support when required.
Supervision & Volunteer Management
Supervise, train, and schedule 10–20+ volunteers, demonstrating work methods that align with the organization’s purpose.Develop strategies and recommendations for volunteer development and organize regular volunteer meetings.Finance & Administration
Ensure policies, procedures, and compliance requirements are followed for handling monetary donations and vouchers.Prepare statistical reports and monthly statistics for SAMIS reporting.Maintain written records, activity logs, and confidential client information on the Salvation Army’s computer system.Review program assistance guidelines periodically with the supervisor.Health and Safety
Mantain cleanliness and safety of the Community & Family Services space in accordance with public health standards.Ensure food safety and comply with OH&S Act, abiding by the Salvation Army’s health and safety policies.Relationship Management
Engage with internal stakeholders : Corps Officer, staff, volunteers, clients, and donors. Engage external stakeholders : community, clients, government, and community social service agencies.
Managerial / Technical Responsibilities
Direct reporting to the Corps Officer / Community & Family Services Director.Recruit, support, supervise, train, and schedule 10–20+ volunteers.Financial And Material Management
Manage distribution of grocery store cards totaling up to $20,000.Oversee Christmas Assistance program materials management and distribution.Working Conditions
Permanent part‑time position : 25 hours per week with flexibility, including weekend and evening duties.Work environment primarily office‑based, with periods of standing, sitting, reaching, bending, and stooping.May encounter difficult people and verbal abuse; ability to lift 30–39 pounds.Occasional travel (up to 10 %) for pickups; use of program vehicle when available.Education, Experience, and Qualifications
Community College Diploma in Social Service Worker, counselling, or related field.Minimum two (2) years prior related experience, including work with multi‑barriered persons with mental health issues.Current, valid Safe Food Handlers Certification or willingness to obtain.Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention Certification preferred.Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License with own vehicle and insurance; provide original driver’s abstract.Knowledge of community resources and networking with government / social service agencies.Skills and Capabilities

Salary range : $34,555.52 to $43,194.39 (maximum $51,833.27). Placement considers market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications. Reasonable accommodation upon request.
