Job Overview

Join our Hard Rock LHD & Trucks Product Engineering team as a Mechanical & Structural Designer and be at the forefront of innovation in the mining industry! As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible to design & develop new and innovative products to solve problems faced by our customers. This includes utilizing computer-aided software, specifically SolidWorks, to create 3D layouts, drawings, and schematics of parts, assemblies and technical renderings. This includes, but is not limited to; customer visits, problem definition, concept development, cross functional reviews, component selection and detailed design, system prototyping and validation, production design release, manufacturing support, and support of field personnel.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Design, analyze and test structural & mechanical components using SolidWorks CAD system and using FEA to verify mechanical & structural components to make up capital equipment.
  • Provide support during the assembly phase of capital equipment.
  • Prepare shop drawing package for equipment (including SRF drawing and General Assembly drawing).
  • Perform drawing updates to address ECNs and NCRs.
  • Prepare proposal drawings and cost estimates as required to support sales.
  • Provide technical support to service department to resolve design issues and commissioning issues.
  • Complete design work as required and participate in testing of prototypes.
  • Assist with technical specifications and SRF forms for capital equipment.
  • Work with production and quality to test functionality of machine after build.
  • Visit customer sites to support sales, on-site issue and commissioning issues as required.
  • Suggest and prepare spare parts list for capital equipment units.
  • Complete design work as required and participate in testing of prototypes.
  • Assist with technical specifications and SRF forms for capital equipment.
  • Work with production and quality to test functionality of machine after build.
  • Work with Powertrain Specialist, Hydraulic and Electrical Engineers to come up with simplified designs.

Qualifications / Requirements

University degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

3+ years with design of underground hard rock equipment desired.

Knowledge of mechanical design standards, techniques, methods, and architecture.

Experience in weldment design and stress analysis.

Experience with Microsoft Office Software and ERP systems. (SAP considered an asset)

Experience with project management methodologies and software.

Fully competent with 3D CAD design, preferably SolidWorks

Strong knowledge of engineering principles, design standards, and EHS regulations.

Good understanding of manufacturing processes (in particular welding and machining)

Understanding of Bill of Materials and MRP systems (ECN’s / NCR’s)

Solid problem-solving skills, including the ability to conduct investigations, perform calculations, and run tests.

High level of initiative with the ability to work independently and as part of a broader team.

Knowledge of fluid mechanics and electrics

Detail-oriented mindset with a focus on accuracy and quality.

Proficient in Ansys for mechanical and structural FEA (finite element analysis)
