The UTM Career Centre is a student-focused service whose mission is to help students develop career management skills that they can use throughout their life.

The staff operate as a team, each contributing via their specific role and by supporting others in Centre goals.

The International Education Centre strives to be an innovative, collaborative and globally significant leader in the internationalization of the student experience.

Through a student-centered approach, we support both international a new to Canada student development during their time at UTM and beyond as well learning abroad for all students.

The Career Counsellor - International is part of a team of career counsellors and employment strategists in the Career Centre and the International Student Advising team in the International Education Centre.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, Career Development at the Career Centre and the Assistant Director, International Students Supports at the International Education Centre, the Career Counsellor - International provides career counselling services to students and recent graduates in both individual and group formats.

The Career Counsellor - International develops and facilitates workshops, including working with campus partners to provide tailored programming.

The role develops and updates career materials and participates in cross-functional teams within and external to the Career Centre and the International Education Centre to fulfill the Centre's goals and mandate.

This position will have a focus on international students and global careers.

Your responsibilities will include :

  • Counselling students on career-related matters by discussing options and consequences while incorporating personal circumstances and an understanding of an individual's background
  • Probing for information from students to identify barriers they might be experiencing
  • Advising and coaching students on developing career-related goals
  • Advising and coaching students on work search strategies and skills
  • Facilitating educational workshops andseminars
  • Developing learning outcomes for workshops and / or services
  • Consulting with instructors, administrators and student groups on the development of tailored programming needs
  • Conducting a detailed analysis of student feedbackand learning outcomes to inform program planning activities

Essential Qualifications :

Master's Degree in Counselling Psychology, Adult Education or acceptable combination of

equivalent experience.

  • Minimum five years experience providing career counselling services, include both working on an individual basis and group work development and facilitation, in both career planning and job searching issues
  • Strong experiential background in student transition; particularly, experience working with diverse communities and understanding international student transition issues
  • Exceptional intercultural competency awareness; experience working with diverse communities and cultures and an understanding of anti-oppression and equity practices are required.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering learning outcomes in group programming, for both in person and virtual delivery.
  • Sound knowledge of career development theory as well as occupations and professions.
  • Extensive knowledge of labour market conditions and opportunities for work.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with students’ multilingual skills and multi-national experiences
  • Awareness andfamiliarity with international markets and career opportunities outside of Canada.
  • Strong computer and software skills (PowerPoint, Publisher, Word, internet search tools, virtual presentation tools e.g. Zoom, Teams etc.)
  • Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication, both in in person and virtual interactions
  • Initiative, strong career research, organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in an collaborative team environment
  • Possess judgment, particularly with respect to confidential information, patience, flexibility and adaptability
  • Demonstrate excellent attention to details with a high degree of accuracy and the ability to problem solve.
  • Demonstratecapacity to handle a heavy workload.

Assets (Nonessential) :

  • Registration with an appropriate professional body e.g. College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.
  • Strong service orientation and oral and written communication skills, especially with a diverse student population
  • Experience working with and a good understanding of university students and recent graduates’ career development needs, particularly the concerns of international students
  • Knowledge of UTM Career Centre services and resources and UTM academic programs.
