Duties
- Perform the all functions of the Pharmacy Technician job as scheduled and / or needed.
- Act as a communication liaison between technicians and Supervisor and / or Manager of Pharmacy.
- Assist the Supervisor and Manager in the organization and assignment of technician workload in the department.
- Responsible for the smooth operation of the sterile compounding area by preparing doses for all sterile admixtures (CIVA and Chemo), compounding STAT doses if needed, compounding IVs / Chemo to cover lunches / breaks or to ensure the timely delivery of medications to patients.
- Assist the Supervisor in monitoring technicians’ adherence to break / meal time schedule to ensure the accurate and timely distribution of medications while minimizing premium pay.
- Assist the Supervisor in monitoring technicians schedule of rotations, weekends, evening, time off in lieu, vacation time and daily assignments for department and ability to balance such any shortage, illness.
- Effectively monitor technician performance. Perform competency assessments on technicians. When in default, re-educate, retrain and to reinforce departmental policies and procedures.
- Assist the Supervisor or Manager in the evaluation of technicians.
- Participate in establishing and meeting relevant continuous Quality Improvement Programs.
- Provide a pharmacy orientation to students enrolled in a Community College Pharmacy Technician Program and / or co-op School Programs.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs related to further development of skills.
- Assist in the updating of policies and procedures.
- Assist with Pharmacist’s order entry as required and identify orders that need prompt attention by Pharmacists.
- Provide education to nursing staff or students with regards to new drug distributions.
- Lead in the implementation of new drug distribution; new services; new equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent.Successful completion of a Pharmacy Technician program as recognized by the Ontario College of Pharmacists.Registration with Ontario College of Pharmacists.Experience
Minimum of two years’ experience in hospital pharmacy practice.Experience with several drug distribution systems.Skills
