Job description
Job location: O’Chiese First Nation, O’Chiese 203 Reserve, Treaty 6 territory,
Alberta.
Job type: Part-time annual contract, temporary until March 31, 2027 with the
potential for extension availability of additional federal funding.
Job schedule: Monday through Thursday, 9 AM to 4:30 PM, optional half-days
on Fridays, 9 AM to 12 PM.
The O’Chiese Jordan’s Principle Contract Dietitian is responsible for supporting
children and youth living on O’Chiese First Nation in achieving positive
nutrition- and health-related outcomes by providing a variety of nutrition
services and programs at both the individual and community levels.
Qualifications:
- Completion of a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree with a Specialization
in Dietetics or equivalent.
- Completion of a Dietetic Internship Program recognized by the Alliance
of Canadian Dietetic Regulatory Bodies.
- Active, up-to-date membership and good standing with the College of
Dietitians of Alberta, or eligibility and intention to apply for membership.
- Understanding of the complex dietary and nutritional history of
Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island and its impacts on the holistic health
and well-being of Indigenous communities today.
- Excellent oral, written, and clinical communication skills and strong
ability to adapt communication to individual and population needs
- Strong self-directedness, organization, prioritization, budgeting, problemsolving,
and time-management skills.
- Experience with Electronic Medical Record software systems (including
Telus MedAccess, Netcare, and Okaki CARE and CHIP).
- Experience using computer programs (e.G., Microsoft 365, Google Suite)
to support nutrition service development and delivery.
- Experience using social media platforms (e.G., Facebook) to plan,
develop, deliver, and evaluate nutrition education initiatives is an asset.
- Experience supporting clients in accessing nutrition-related benefits and
supports (e.G., Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped Special
Diet Funding, Non-Insured Health Benefits) is an asset.
- Experience planning and implementing culturally-sensitive nutrition
services and programs in consultation and collaboration with audience/
community members is an asset.
- Experience providing engaging, hands-on nutrition education
experiences to children and youth is an asset.
Summary of duties and responsibilities:
- Performing ongoing community-level assessments of nutrition- and foodrelated
strengths, opportunities, needs, and challenges of O’Chiese First
Nation to inform nutrition programming.
- Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team at O’Chiese Health Centre to
perform nutrition assessments and plan, provide, and evaluate
personalized nutrition interventions to clients.
- Using Electronic Medical Record programs (e.G., Netcare, MedAccess,
and Okaki CARE and CHIP) to access client information and document
nutrition care in a safe, accurate, and timely manner.
- Planning and running hands-on nutrition and food education sessions for
students at O’Chiese School to support them in developing healthy
eating knowledge and food literacy skills.
- Providing community-based nutrition education programs, activities, and
events to support Nation members in building healthy eating habits and
healthy eating environments.
- Working alongside local knowledge keepers, traditional teachers, and
Elders to ensure nutrition services are culturally-sensitive and informed
by local foodways and ways of knowing and being.
- Supporting other teams, departments, and institutions on the Nation in
developing and implementing healthy food policies and practices to
support community members’ nutritional and overall health.
- Tracking hours worked, mileage, expenses and receipts, weekly
activities, client information, and funding outcomes to report to the
Contractor Supervisor on a bi-monthly basis.
- Fulfilling any additional duties and responsibilities within their scope as
determined in collaboration with the Health Director, Nurse in Charge,
Contractor Supervisor, and other relevant parties (e.G., healthcare team,
other department managers, community members, Elders, et cetera).
Working conditions:
- Daily motor vehicle transportation required to travel to and from O’Chiese
203 Indian Reserve (located 52 km northwest of Rocky Mountain House)
on a combination of paved, undivided highways and gravel roads
regardless of weather and road conditions.
- Ability to move between and work within a variety of departments and
institutions, including the Health Centre, School, Daycare, Headstart,
Social Assistance, Band Office, and Community Centre.
- Ability to climb stairs and to lift items up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to effectively utilize laptop computers, printer and copier
machines, and audiovisual equipment.
Salary: Will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
