One of our healthcare clients is looking for a Registered Respiratory Therapist- Relocation to Thunder Bay, ONLength : 6 months Contract with possibility of extension Location : - Thunder Bay, ON (ON-SITE) JOB SUMMARYThe Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is responsible for the providing of oxygen therapy, cardio / respiratory equipment monitoring and the assessment and treatment of cardio / respiratory and associated disorders to maintain or restore ventilation and for diagnostic procedures related to these techniques. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES- The RRT, under medical direction, provides care, treatment, and rehabilitation to patients with pulmonary disorders by means of respiratory therapy. - The RRT is responsible for providing a high level of technical and clinical assistance to members of the healthcare team.- The RRT is responsible for communicating with the manager and with other members of the health care team.- The RRT is responsible for providing instruction in the use and monitoring of equipment as required by other members of the health care team.Diagnostics : - Samples arterial blood for gas analysis via arterial puncture or direct line sampling. Analyses arterial blood samples and reports results - Inserts radial arterial line as directed by physician- Performs patient assessment with appropriate documentation- Performs non-invasive cardiopulmonary monitoring- Sets up, monitors, discontinues, and reduces and reports data for overnight and resting / walking oximetry. Clinical and Therapeutics : - Performs bedside pulmonary function testing and reports all required data- Assists with cardioversion of patients when requested- Provides airway support during conscious sedation - Administers therapeutic gases, aerosols, and humidification using a variety of approved techniques and equipment- Attends codes with duties as specified by attending physician and existing policies and procedures including intubation- Initiates and assesses oxygen therapy- Accompanies critically ill patients during transport internally within hospital and external to other tertiary hospitals- Assists with therapeutic bronchoscopies- Delivers topical pulmonary chemotherapy with bronchodilators, steroids, antibiotics, narcotics and other medications - Received and transcribes physicians' orders- Recommends therapeutic modalities and interventions- Performs weaning from mechanical ventilation according to protocol- Applies, alters, monitors and discontinues CPAP / non-invasive mask ventilation systems- Assesses therapeutic effect of respiratory care and documents same- Initiates, monitors, and continuous non-invasive cardiopulmonary monitoring- Performs functional assessment of the chest- Attends and participates in patient rounds Technical : - Performs oxygen analysis- Provides technical advice and assistance to technical personnel as needed- Tests equipment prior to use on a patient- Troubleshoots and maintains cardio / respiratory equipment- Leak tests and sterilizes bronchoscope after use Documentation / Administrative / Educational : - Keeps accurate, legible records- Documents care, interventions, clinical findings, and other relevant patient information in patient record according to CRTO standards- Assists in training new staff, students, and other hospital staff- Serves as preceptor for respiratory therapy students and completes appropriate documentation required by the respiratory therapy student program- Participates in orientation of new staff- Actively pursues personal continuing education- Remains current with trends in respiratory care- Completes statistical record daily- Completes all quality assurance activities- Reviews policy / procedure manual, body substance precautions, WHIMS at least yearlyEMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS- The employee must be a graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program and have a current license with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO).- Recommended ACLS, PALS, NRP- The employee must demonstrate and maintain a high standard of patient care.- The RRT must be cooperative, reliable, and well organized with a positive professional attitude.- Staff therapists must be self-directive and have an assertive, proactive approach towards supporting, initiating, and implementing departmental policies and procedures.- The RRT must maintain good interpersonal and intra-professional working relationships within the health care team and within the Cardio / Respiratory Service.- The RRT must have excellent verbal communication skills and be supportive of hospital as well as departmental policies.
