We’re pleased to partner with BC Cancer Foundation (BCCF) in their search for a Director, Content and Communications. This role is responsible for leading the team, building content capabilities, and creating compelling, on-brand and highly relevant communications for BCCF’s owned and earned channels.

With over 90 employees working dispersed across 5 sites, the BC Cancer Foundation (BCCF) – the fundraising partner of BC Cancer – is one of the largest non-profit organizations in British Columbia. They engage with more than 100,000 donors and communities to inspire philanthropic investment in BC Cancer and partner with some of the world’s leading researchers, oncologists and care providers to advance research and elevate care for all British Columbians.

About the workplace

This is a full-time hybrid role that requires working 3 days a week in the Vancouver, BC office after the initial in-office training period (4 weeks max.) is complete.

BC Cancer Foundation has implemented a mandatory vaccination policy requiring that all staff who work in any of our physical workplaces must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Considerations and reasonable accommodation can be taken upon request and will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

About the role

  • Develop an integrated communications strategy that aligns with organization priorities. Identify opportunities to elevate BCCF’s profile and deepen community connections across B.C. while proactively managing reputational risks
  • Lead the development of BCCF’s content strategy and calendar, finding meaningful ways through diverse storytelling to create human connections, communicate the tangible impact of philanthropy, and empower audiences to go beyond belief
  • Oversee the creation of PR go-to-market strategies. Support the development of deeper media and influencer relationships, and ensure proactive engagement across the province
  • Guide and execute an executive thought leadership plan via OpEds, events, social media and earned media. Ensure consistent messaging with a strong point of view
  • Lead the development and execution of BCCF’s social media strategy, elevating engagement with BCCF, Tour de Cure, Workout to Conquer Cancer and Cypress Challenge communities
  • Analyze, understand and respond to trending topics. Work with the digital team to better understand online content performance, leverage SEO insights and best position content
  • Guide the team as they create highly effective and on-brand content assets, including magazines, blogs, webpages, social media, videos, presentations, speaking notes, and audio / podcasts
  • Partner with the BC Cancer communications team, aligning on external efforts and engaging PHSA staff
  • Build internal capabilities and drive continuous improvement in Content and Communications by proactively optimizing processes and tools
  • Be responsible for ensuring projects are completed on time and align with BCCF editorial standards
  • Identify current and future gaps within the team structure and partner with the Chief Marketing Officer on resource planning
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to the team, supporting their learning, development and growth paths
  • Monitor and analyze metrics, such as reach, engagement, and conversion rates, to measure effectiveness and make data-driven improvements
  • Stay up to date with industry trends and emerging communications technologies to identify innovative marketing communications opportunities

The salary range offered for this role is $110,000 - $130,000 with a comprehensive benefits package that includes 5 weeks of paid vacation, paid time off over Christmas, participation in the Municipal Pension Plan, extended health, dental, paramedical coverage with 100% of premiums paid by the company, 2% incentive program and access to the Foundation’s professional development budget.

About you

  • 10+ years’ experience in content marketing, marketing communications or media relations plus relevant education
  • 5+ years of experience leading and building high-performance teams
  • Proven success in leading content and communications functions at a complex, dynamic and sophisticated organization
  • Strong business acumen and ability to successfully operationalize change
  • Strategic thinker, experienced in data-driven, audience-focused content planning
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Superior project management skills with excellent attention to detail and ability to prioritize, resource plan and ensure on-time delivery of work. Strong process orientation, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Experience in setting editorial direction, finding strong story angles, distilling technical and complex scientific information into engaging content, and developing effective messaging across a variety of formats
  • Collaborative and agile problem solver who can efficiently navigate ambiguity
  • Strong ability to make weighted and thoughtful decisions in a timely manner
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a natural ability to build relationships. Able to influence and work effectively, proactively and collaboratively with cross-functional teams, senior leaders, and external agencies
  • Solid understanding of media, digital and social platforms, organic search, and content trends, Keen understanding of content and media measurement, optimization and reporting
  • Experience and demonstrated strength in leading, developing and motivating a team
  • Quick learner who approaches life and work with positivity, professionalism and passion
