Duties

Laboratory Support Technician positions in the Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island Laboratory provide analysis of specimens following standardized protocols and established methodologies in a quality controlled laboratory environment and requires language competencies in English. Laboratory Support Technicians receive and prepare a wide range of samples submitted for analysis and perform established analytical procedures. The intent is to have an inventory of candidates to draw from when vacancies arise for current and future needs at the Charlottetown (CL) Laboratory. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis as long as the poster is active.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION
EEd1 - Post-secondary diploma in a natural or applied science from a recognized institution or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience in a laboratory environment.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE
EE1 - Experience working in a laboratory environment (which may include student time).

ASSET EXPERIENCE
AEx1- Experience working in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory.
AEx2 - Experience in handling and processing samples following standardized
protocols preferably in a laboratory environment.
AEx3 - Experience working in biocontainment facilities for different purposes.
AEx4 - Experience in using common laboratory equipment e.g. microscope,
balance, centrifuge.

ASSET KNOWLEDGE
AK1 - Knowledge of general laboratory techniques and safety procedures.
AK2 - Knowledge of quality assurance procedures including ISO/IEC 17025.
AK3 - Knowledge of using spreadsheets and database computer software programs such as Microsoft Suite Office (MS Word, Excel, Teams).

ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS
A representative workforce is a core priority for the CFIA. Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Applicants who have not lived in Canada for the past five (or ten, depending on security level) years may be required to submit a police certificate from each country in which they have lived for six months or more during this period, as well as other documentation required for the security screening process. Failure to submit this documentation if requested will eliminate the application from further consideration.

Any of the following conditions of employment may be required for an appointment:
•Willing and available to work shifts.
•Willing and available to work irregular hours (e.g., days, nights, weekends, statutory holidays).
•Willing and available to work overtime, as required.
•To use in the prescribed circumstances and manner all prescribed safety materials, equipment, devices and clothing.
•To use prescribed and provided respiratory equipment that meets the respiratory program requirements; to undergo fit testing (e.g. may need to be clean-shaven, depending on the respirator design).
•Willing and able to work in environmentally challenging or physically demanding conditions.
•Willing and able to work in environmentally challenging or physically demanding conditions and with pathogens in high security laboratory biocontainment or with potential allergens.
