The French Language Assessor is responsible for administering assessment tool and referring newcomers to the most appropriate language training program funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD).

The Language Assessor works as a team member ensuring quality programming and service delivery, achievement of program goals and establishment and nurturing of effective working relationships within the program, the Association and the community.

In this role, you will:

  • Screen clients’ immigration status eligibility for placement in IRCC- and MLTSD funded language training.

  • Administer Batterie de tests de classement aux Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens according to principles outlined in the initial training and according to the YMCA, IRCC and MCCSS policies and standards.

  • Refer clients to the most appropriate language training providers based on Canadian Language Benchmarks/Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens, the national placement grid and individual client needs.

  • Re-refer clients whose needs have changed since initial assessment.

  • Provide language needs assessment information to clients.

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date client files and documentation using a shared database.

  • Prepare and submit statistics and program reports, as required, in a timely manner.

  • Maintain regular contact with CLIC FSL CLIC en ligne and other training providers and community partners thereby sharing program information with all interested parties.

  • Participate in volunteer supervision, staff meetings and professional development trainings as required.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What you need to succeed:

  • Commitment to the YMCA’s
  • Focus on the health, safety and wellbeing of all children, youth, and vulnerable people in YMCA programs including understanding legal and moral obligations related to reporting suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services
  • YMCA Competencies: Accountable, Relationship-Builder, Improvement-Orientated, Team Player & Leader, Equity and Wellbeing Promoter

You bring:

  • Certificate in teaching French/FSL or equivalent and/or post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., French language and literature, linguistics, or modern languages) is mandatory.

  • Experience in teaching FSL to adults is mandatory (minimum 300 hours within the last 2 years in Canada)

  • Ability to comment orally and in writing in both Canadian official languages on the effectiveness of client’s communication.

  • NCLC Booth camp training certificate is mandatory

  • Knowledge of CLB demonstrated through use of and/or participation in CLB workshops

  • Training in second language acquisition, socio-cultural variables in language learning and the teaching of the four language skills.

  • Demonstrated bilingualism, verbal and written, in both Canadian official languages.

  • Theoretical understanding of and practical experience working with appropriate stages of the Canadian Language Benchmarks/Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens.

  • Knowledge of the settlement sector.

  • Excellent interview and assessment skills.

  • Proficient with personal computer applications, e.g. MS Teams, Access, Word, Excel, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, Adobe and knowledgeable about network; willingness to learn new skills and technologies.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to effectively prioritize responsibilities

  • Ability to work in an efficient manner both independently and as part of a team.

  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers.

  • Excellent written communication skills.

  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity

  • Be very familiar with Zoom options (including but not limited to: scheduling meetings, sharing a screen, copy-pasting into chat, managing participants)

  • Be resourceful when problems occur on a website

  • Have experience with online self-directed courses (such as courses on learning.language.ca)

  • Must be able to work evenings, Saturdays or Sundays.

  • Flexibility regarding assigned work hours and locations.

  • Excellent understanding of diversity, inclusion, and equity, including the ability to identify and address barriers in Employment and Community Programs, work effectively with diverse stakeholders, and integrate equity into program design
