Job description

Position Title : Coordinator, Indigenous and intersectional Community Engagement

Part Time, Contract

Location : Edmonton, Alberta

I. Scope and Summary of Primary

This position supports CNIB’s growing commitment to equitable, inclusive, and culturally informed programming for Indigenous Peoples and broader BIPOC communities living with sight loss in Edmonton. With funding from the Edmonton Community Foundation, the individual in this role will lead peer programming development, community outreach, and relationship‑building to identify service gaps and ensure representation in program design and delivery.

The position contributes to CNIB’s national advocacy and accessibility work and helps ensure programming is reflective of the cultural and social realities of diverse communities, with a focus on disability justice and intersectionality.

II. Essential Functions

  • Build and maintain strong, trust‑based relationships with Indigenous, BIPOC, racialised, newcomer, and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, as well as other equity‑deserving groups in the Edmonton area.
  • Conduct outreach and authentic engagement to understand community demographics, identify service gaps, and inform inclusive and culturally relevant CNIB programming.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders and decision‑makers, including municipal governments and community organisations, to advance disability justice and accessibility.
  • Work closely with CNIB’s Indigenous Strategy, Advocacy, Accessibility and Inclusion teams, and related committees to align programming and initiatives with organisational values and strategic goals.
  • Support internal communication, planning, and training initiatives that enhance collaboration across departments and contribute to national and regional advocacy efforts in line with CNIB’s strategic priorities.

III. Qualifications

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Strong communication, relationship‑building, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in data collection and analysis is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in diverse team environments.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience and Education

  • Post‑secondary diploma / degree in a related field. OR Proven experience in related projects.
  • Lived experience as a member of an Indigenous or BIPOC community is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in community engagement, programme facilitation, or social services—especially within Indigenous or equity‑deserving communities.
  • Knowledge of culturally safe practices and an understanding of the unique needs of individuals with sight loss.
