Junior Lifeguard - Summer

Parks & Recreation Department

POSITION PURPOSE :

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Recreation Facilities & Programs and the technical direction and guidance of the Aquatic Supervisor and the Program Coordinator, provides swimming instruction to program registrants and serves as lifeguard during public recreational swimming.

As part of the deck team, the Junior Lifeguard maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the aquatic facility and enforces high safety standards at all times. The position assists in the smooth delivery of scheduled programs. Provides functional direction and guidance to Aquatic Attendants while maintaining open lines of communication with the Senior Lifeguard, other aquatic staff, patrons and supervisors.

The Junior Lifeguard will perform all activities in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES :

Program Support and Implementation (65%)

• Instructs all ages and levels of program registrants.
• Supervises children and adults while lifeguarding during public swimming.
• Participates in the maintenance of cleanliness and organization at the pool.
• Participates and assists with the organization and running of special events and theme days.
• Participates, as required, in departmental functions and activities.
• Assists in delivering planned, well-balanced, effective programming adapting to abilities, learning styles and different mobility.
• Acts as part of a team to ensure that aquatic staff are organized and prepared for programs.
• Ensures protocols are followed and assist to maintain the cleanliness and disinfection of the aquatic facility, pool, change rooms, washrooms including spilled bodily fluids from accidents or injuries.
• Assists in the deck supervision duties and ensuring that the facility is safe to open and remain open for patrons.
• Always maintains a high standard of safety supervision.
• Assists in ensuring compliance with City and departmental guidelines, policies and procedures as outlined.
• Performs other duties, responsibilities and functions as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

WORK TIME FRAME : Available from late June until the end of August (working a varied schedule, including weekends).

Please note : Successful applicants will be required to attend mandatory training during the month of June 2025.

Remuneration Range : $17.67 - $19.47 per hour (2025 Rates), plus 4% vacation.

Any new hires will be required to obtain and submit a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check as a condition of employment, prior to their start date. Police Vulnerable Sector Checks will only be requested for those eighteen (18) years of age or older. Those selected for re-hire and have previously provided a Police Vulnerable Sector Check will not be required to attain a new police check; however, they will be required to sign a ‘Criminal Offence Self Declaration Form’ so long as no less than twelve (12) months have passed since their last day of work with the Corporation.
