Ontario's Public Safety Radio Network (PSRN) is one of the largest and most complex public safety radio networks in North America. It covers approximately 750,000 km2 of area. PSRN serves more than 38,000 front-line and emergency responders, such as, police officers, fire service staff, ambulance paramedics, with the radio communications technology, equipment, and other resources that they need to keep Ontarians safe. Responders use this technology to communicate with their dispatchers and one another when responding to emergencies.
Emergency Services Telecommunications Division (ESTD) under the Ministry of Solicitor General (SOLGEN), has undertaken an ambitious project to upgrade the PSRN system. The network will be made more modern and compatible with other networks in the country. A supplier has been selected to provide equipment and services. ESTD is executing this large project in collaboration with other ministries and partners, such as, ministry of health, ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Ontario Provincial Police etc.
The project is governed by an empowered steering committee comprising leaders from all the stakeholder entities.
While detailed planning for the implementation is underway, some work of different project workstreams is also being executed. Key activities of the project fall under the category of, business analysis, vendor coordination, stakeholder management, training, organization change management, project governance, radio resources acquisition and deployment, network design and design changes, radio site readiness (civil work included), planning and execution of transition from old to new network, service management etc.
