Essential Functions :
- Deliver high quality services through excellent relationships with participants.
- When instructing, develop lesson plans for assigned classes and provide quality instruction.
- Deliver high quality supervision at all times while on guard duty, guard from appropriate location and follow guard-to-bather ratio. Correct unsafe techniques and ensure safe and effective use of equipment by participants.
- Promote prevention of accidents and incidents through rule enforcement and good maintenance practices. Follow Provincial and Local Public Health regulations at all times and monitor and reinforce Aquatics Safety Standards.
- Respond to all incidents and accidents that may occur in the aquatic or surrounding area.
- Role model best practices daily by interacting with members in the facility.
- Role model a personal commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
- Demonstrate and promote a personal understanding of and appreciation for the mission, vision, and values and the YMCA programs and services.
- Become an expert for all emergency procedures, pool and aquatic programming standards and best practices; respond to situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures; completes related reports or recommendations as required.
- Maintain active surveillance of the pool area and is maintains great focus while guarding / instructing You are the role model for safety rules, policies, and guidelines.
- Develop and maintain positive friendly and respectful relationships with volunteers, members, program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization.
- Help participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA.
- Understand the YMCA’s aquatics programs and schedules and refer program participants and families to other programs they may enjoy.
- Receive regular feedback by on deck / in-water coaching and best-practice audits to improve individual and team performance.
- Ensure YMCA Aquatics SAM standards are consistently met or exceeded and supports the Head Guard in responding to service issues with timely solutions.
- Perform aquatics facilities, and all equipment checks (emergency, safety, program), on a regular basis ensuring standards are met and resolving issues.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety of the aquatics area while off-deck. Records completed tasks to ensure smooth communication for rotations.
- Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and / or the Alberta health code such as daily water tests, pool attendance tracking, maintenance sheets, class attendance & participant progress, and more as required
- Supports the department, branch and association in implementing and achieving goals.
What You'll Need for This Job
Minimum 16 years of age (16-17 years under supervision of 18+year old lifeguard).Lifeguard Certifications : Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C & AED , Lifesaving National Lifeguard (NL)Instructor Certifications : Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C & AED, Lifesaving Swim Instructor (SI) or YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI)Obtain Oxygen Administration (O2) with 6 months of hire date.Must obtain Lifesaving Swim Instructor (SI), First Aid Instructor (FAI) or YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI) certification within the first year of hire dateHolds one of YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI),OR Swim Instructor - Lifesaving (SI) an asset.Aquatics Emergency Care (AEC) and National Coaching certification (NCCP) are an asset.Able to obtain a Police Information Check with Vulnerable sector check.Must obtain employer specific WHMIS and child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.Ability to maintain certification-level currency without expiry, as well as physical and mental readiness.Work Environment & Physical Demands :
