Overview
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, patient and staff safety is a priority. The Nurse Practitioner contributes to continuous quality and safety improvement throughout all aspects of the position.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive assessment of patients/clients/residents, including diagnosing diseases, disorders, and conditions.
- Initiate treatment plans, manage health care, administer therapeutic interventions, and prescribe medications within statutory and regulatory limits.
- Provide professional guidance to other health professionals; practice autonomously and as part of an interdisciplinary team, making referrals to physicians as appropriate.
- Collaborate with patients and the interdisciplinary team to identify and assess trends with implications for patients, families, and communities.
- Develop and implement population‑based, evidence‑based strategies to improve health and participate in policy‑making activities that influence health services.
- Participate in peer review and self‑review to evaluate outcomes at the individual, community, and population levels.
Qualifications
- Registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing NP registrant.
- Two (2) years of recent, relevant clinical nursing experience.

- Effective communication and collaboration with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
- Consultation and formal referral of patients to appropriate professionals.
- Critical appraisal of health research literature to determine best practices.
- Recognition of population health trends and planning of prevention and health promotion strategies.
- Implementation and evaluation of planned changes.
- Supervision and assessment of care delivered by others.
- Leadership and teamwork proficiency.
- Adaptability and effective interaction in complex, dynamic situations.
- Teaching, coaching, and mentoring capabilities.
- Identification and response to legal and ethical issues in patient care.
- Self‑assessment and accountability for professional development.
- Physical ability to carry out job duties.
