Overview

A Communications Technician 2 is responsible for the installation and planning & layout of communications cabling and equipment in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. The role involves installing basic equipment using hand and power tools, understanding Telecom Systems, blueprints, and standards. The technician should aim to become a qualified BICSI Technician. Telecom technicians are full-time employees with benefits.

Responsibilities

• Knowledge and safe use of hand tools and power tools
• Wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Following safety policies and procedures
• Participating in daily safety and work briefings
• Installing various types of low voltage cable
• Inspection, termination, testing, troubleshooting of ISP/OSP telecommunications systems (Fiber Optics, Category 5, 6, 6A, and associated equipment)
• Surveying and documenting existing telecommunications infrastructure
• Sketching rack, floor, and wall elevations
• Training and supervising apprentices in cable installation from TR to WAO, ensuring proper bundling and organization
• Performing quality assurance checks on team’s work
• Maintaining a clean work area and participating in site cleanup
• Securing tools and materials daily
• Up to 25% travel, including domestic and international
• Ability to obtain a Secret clearance

Qualifications / Skills Sets / Expectations

• 4+ years experience in the commercial communications industry
• Must be 18+ years old
• High School diploma or GED
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
• Ability to pass basic telecommunication knowledge test
• Experience reading plans and specifications
• Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills
• Reliable transportation
• Proper attire (long pants, shoulder-covering shirt)
• Provide basic tools prior to employment

Physical Abilities

• Lift at least 100 lbs, 60 lbs for extended periods
• Handle ladders and work at heights up to 60 feet
• Perform routine physical movements (climbing, lifting, crawling, etc.)
• Good vision and hearing, ability to communicate in English
• Recognize problems and apply general rules to solutions

Desired Skills

• Active security clearance
• Valid passport and willingness to travel overseas
• BICSI Technician credentials
• Fiber or manufacture certifications
• Experience with Microsoft Office
