Job Description

These positions may be permanent or casual / on-call assignments.

You must be available at least 3 days per week.

Assignments are in schools located across the TDSB.

Designated Early Childhood Educator (DECE)

French Immersion / Extended French Program

Bilingual both French / English Fluency Required)

Full-Day Kindergarten and Extended Day Programs

Please note these positions require Oral and written French and English language proficiency. Applicants must pass a French test

Locations vary across the city

Hours of work : 6 hours per day, scheduled based on program needs

Core day : during the school day between 8 : 00 am - 4 : 30 pm

Extended Day Program schedules :

Early Shift : between 7 : 00 am to 2 : 00 pm

Late Shift : between 11 : 45 am to 6 : 45 pm

Hourly Rate (effective September 1, 2023)

Supply Rate : $ plus statutory & vacation percentage.

Temporary Rate after completing 30 days rate increases to $ plus statutory & vacation percentage

The Designated Early Childhood Educator (DECE) partners with Educators to plan and implement the Full Day Kindergarten Program for French Immersion within a classroom and Extended Day Program.

The candidate will provide supervision and age-appropriate programming for groups of students as part of the French Immersion program.

The candidate will collaborate in the design of programs and environments which will enhance children’s cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development.

  • Partner with the Kindergarten educators to plan and implement developmentally appropriate learning experiences that build skills in French literacy and cognition through large and small group activities such as music, story-time, co-operative games, the arts, waterplay, sand play, drama, construction, science / inquiry, and indoor / outdoor play.
  • Work in collaboration with the kindergarten educators to implement the French Immersion curriculum and address individual student’s needs, stages of development and interests.
  • Provide positive social and emotional experiences to strengthen prosocial skills such as sharing, problem solving, and cooperation.
  • Plan programs and environments that facilitate play-based activities and ongoing opportunities for developmental progress.
  • Maintain a healthy emotional and social learning environment for all students.
  • Supervise and assist children in washroom routines, dressing, snack and during lunchtime activities and accompany children on field trips.
  • Work collaboratively as a team and with the educators and school staff to deliver a French Immersion Kindergarten / Extended Day program.
  • Report to parents and supervisors on children’s developmental progress within healthy, safe, nurturing, and challenging play environments before and after school.
  • Observe and assess children's progress and learning behaviours.
  • Provide supervision and age-appropriate programming for groups of students as part of the Extended Day Program as required, this includes (but it not limited to) :
  • Provide direction to Early Childhood Assistant if present.
  • Ensure a healthy and safe environment, wherein diverse activities engage students of various ages, and build on their prosocial and language development.
  • Maintain all appropriate records for students (, attendance, health issues, etc.).
  • Ensure the learning environment is set up appropriately (, display, upkeep, organization of materials, etc.).
  • Maintain clean and safe environments.
  • Facilitate successful transitions throughout the Extended Day Program and regular school day.
  • Attend and engage in staff meetings and professional development activities; and
  • Other related duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Two-year Community College Early Childhood Education Diploma along with 6 months of childcare experience in an educational setting
  • Proof of Registration with the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators
  • Oral and written French and English language proficient applicants must pass a French test
  • Knowledge of Ministry of Education Program and Extended Day Program Guidelines
  • Ability to communicate in a sensitive, courteous manner with children, parents, staff, and the public.
  • Proven ability to deal with difficult situations and to take appropriate action in stressful or emergency situations according to policies and procedures.
  • Experience planning and implementing age-appropriate programs for children between the ages of four and 12 years.
  • Basic computer, strong organizational and time management skills plus the ability to meet deadlines.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR B or C Certification OR
  • Current Emergency First Aid and CPR B or C Certification
  • Ability to stand / walk for extended periods and move / carry equipment for program
  • Must be able to physically assist children as required (, lifting)
