DESCRIPTION

Amazon's Canada Indirect Tax team is looking for a senior tax professional to lead our Indirect Tax Planning team! This is a senior leadership role responsible for managing, coordinating, overseeing and setting the strategy for all Canadian indirect tax planning activities, reporting directly to the Head of Canada Indirect Tax.

The candidate will gain a deep understanding of Amazon's various business models and end-to-end systems in order to ensure effective and clear communication and requirements with business partners, stakeholders, and senior tax leadership.

This is a senior position and the candidate must have significant expertise in Canadian indirect tax matters (GST / HST / PST), including providing advice on complex Canadian indirect tax topics, understanding impacts of relevant court decisions, and understanding user experience with respect to Canadian indirect tax federally and across all four sales tax provinces. Candidates must be comfortable operating independently and directly liaising with tax authorities, including those in senior positions, as well as with various business and partner teams within the company.

Working closely with the wider Canada Tax team, and other tax teams is also a key function of this role. The candidate will also be expected to support the wider Canada Indirect Tax team with audit, controllership, tax planning and policy efforts. For example, understanding and communicating the impacts of new tax laws or policies to businesses and other stakeholders, understanding compliance, controllership, and audit requirements to ensure comprehensive and clear requirements are provided to business and partner teams. The candidate should also possess a base knowledge of direct tax issues and how those can impact an identified business solution, or audit request. The candidate will work closely with other members of the global tax department to obtain cross-functional tax subject matter input, and ensure coordination of cross-functional tax solutions and approaches.

Key job responsibilities

  • Management and coordination of Canada indirect tax planning and related enquiries for all Amazon business (except AWS);
  • Ensuring new projects launch with Canada indirect tax requirements and processes implemented, minimizing risk and exposure to penalties;
  • Reporting on planning initiatives and launches to senior leaders;
  • Identifying and tracking planning and policy trends, both in Canada and globally;
  • Analyzing and supporting legislative changes for Canada indirect tax that impact Amazon's businesses;
  • Researching complex Canadian indirect tax issues;
  • Drafting tax technical memos and opinions;
  • Liaising with advisors and tax authorities on matters relating to Canadian indirect tax planning and the Amazon business;
  • Promoting indirect tax awareness and knowledge internally including liaising with key stakeholders on changes to systems, policies, and processes;
  • Assisting with contract negotiations and reviews;
  • Assisting with career development of other team members.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of tax experience with a significant amount of time providing technical guidance experience
  • 10+ years of tax, finance or a related analytical field experience
  • Experience analyzing and reviewing statutes, regulations, and case law and then extracting data to make appropriate recommendations
  • Experience within a multinational business and either legal or accountancy firm experience
  • 10+ years of experiences in all Canadian indirect taxes (GST / HST; QST; BC PST; SK PST; MB RST)
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Chartered Accountant (or equivalent) or degree in law, taxation, or accountancy
  • Completion of CPA GST / HST In-Depth
  • Canadian indirect tax audit experience
  • Ability to present to and influence all levels of management
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to draft strategy documents and technical opinions
  • Detail-oriented individual who takes ownership of projects with little guidance needed
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively on milestone driven projects
  • Ability to work in an informal, and often ambiguous environment with tight deadlines
  • Base knowledge of Canadian direct tax
  • Data analytics skills
  • Proficiency in French

    The base salary for this position ranges from $123,000 / year up to $205,400 / year. Salary is based on a number of factors and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and / or other benefits.
