Graphic Designer Summer Student 2026

Location: Onsite at 31 Caroline Street N., Waterloo, ON
Employment Term: Full Time Contract from May 4, 2026 - August 21, 2026
Position Reports To: Senior Science Writer and Editor, and Editorial Lead

The starting hourly rate for this position is between $21.50 and $24.00 per hour based on a 37.5 hour work week and commensurate with candidate experience and education. Perimeter’s compensation approach is designed to promote fairness and transparency, ensuring alignment with internal equity and external market benchmarks.

Summer at Perimeter is busy and we need your help. We have summer student positions available throughout the Institute, running from May 4, 2026 to August 21, 2026.

The Communications and Public Engagement team is busy in the summer supporting the Institute. The Graphic Designer Summer Student will support all departments with graphic design requests, from internal digital signage to external media, as well as create visual science communications to support and explain various physics concepts.

What you will do:

Graphic Design:

• Use Perimeter brand standards and templates to design compelling graphics for both print and digital media, including digital signage, internal and external communications, and reports
• Respond to incoming graphics requests from administrative teams
• Animate logos and other Perimeter graphics and design elements for use on digital signage, website and social media

Visual Science Communication:

• Design infographics, visual listicles and posters
• Design visual explainers and short animations of physics and science concepts

What you need to have:

• Enrolled in or graduating from postsecondary education in visual arts, graphic design, animation or another related field, or equivalent experience
• Proven competence in graphic design and digital animation
• Understanding of and/or courses in storytelling and communication
• A creative individual who can bring ideas to life
• An interest in physics and science is an asset
• Experience or courses in science communication is helpful, but not required
