We are looking for a Health Safety and Environment Advisor to support our Health, Safety and Environment Branch (HSE). The Health Safety and Environment Advisor would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

Your primary responsibilities :

  • Advising, promoting and coaching management and employees on relevant HSE work standards, tools, practices, procedures, and regulations;
  • Partnering with Site / Client for the application and implementation of the Hazard prevention program;
  • Assisting with hazardous occurrence incident investigations, identification of causes and appropriate measures;
  • Participating in the development of the site's / clients’ HSE strategy and setting of pertinent goals and action plans;
  • Working with clients to identify adequate HSE resources (outsourced training or services) and required PPE for the specific tasks;
  • Actively participating in operational and group meetings, townhalls, committees as required.

What we are looking for :

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the desire to learn about new clients, new policies and programs;
  • Demonstrated experience in the implementation of safety programs in mostly industrial or research environments;
  • Fine tuned analytical and communication skills.

  • Each research area presents a variety of aspects ranging from worker health and protection, to animal safety, biosafety, radiation safety, hazardous materials management, noise and air emissions, waste waters, species at risk, and the list goes on
  • NRC’s HSE Branch works in collaboration with the research centres to proactively establish, promote and implement best practices in HSE management enabling the health and safety of our employees, our neighbouring communities and the protection of our environment!
  • You will partner with your assigned clients in the research centres and corporate branches to expand upon a HSE culture that works proactively.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates :

Education

Bachelor’s degree in science (chemistry, biology, biochemistry, environment), engineering, or industrial hygiene.

Equivalent level of training, knowledge and experience may be considered (as an alternate to the above).

Assets but not a requirement :

  • OSH or Environmental certification or diploma
  • CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) certification

Experience

  • Significant* experience providing guidance, advice and support in relation to occupational health, safety and environment in multi-faceted work operations.
  • Experience working in a scientific, engineering and / or industrial work environment, supporting the implementation of health & safety related regulations, policies and programs.

This includes experience performing risk assessments, preparing safe work procedures, conducting audits or workplace inspections, providing emergency response support, and-participating in investigations following incidents and accidents.

  • Experience in the implementation of HSE programs.
  • Significant is defined as at least 3 years of experience.

Asset but not a requirement : Experience in the development of HSE programs.

Condition of Employment

Reliability Status

Must be able to work in a physical environment requiring manual dexterity, crouching, bending and handling heavy and bulky objects.

Must wear protective equipment when needed.

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of the Canada Labour Code Part II and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, including their associated legislation and regulations.
  • Ability to interpret applicable health and safety legislation, relevant standards and / or accepted best practices.
  • Ability to synthesize multiple sources of information or summarize complex problems and present the subject in a concise written or oral briefing.
  • Ability to provide advice and guidance to clients.

Compensation

Salary under review.

From $69,087 to $81,221 per annum.
