Salary Range : $2, – $2, Biweekly  ($51, - $62,

Work Location : St Bruno / St Raymond Catholic School : 402 Melita Crescent, Toronto

With a staff of 14,000, the Toronto Catholic is a dynamic school board and is seeking a  Sign Language Interpreter.

PLEASE NOTE : THE WORK SCHEDULE IS 10 MONTHS

HOURS OF WORK : SEVEN (7) HOURS PER DAY

CRITERIA FOR INTERVIEW :

  • 3-year College Diploma in American Sign Language – English Interpreter Program or equivalent
  • Minimum one (1) year of related experience
  • Fluent in ASL, English and manually-coded English
  • General knowledge of Secondary School curricula

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

The primary function of this job is to act as the interpreter of communication between the deaf and hard of hearing students and the mainstream teachers and students; to provide direct and full access to the regular classroom (especially subject specialization) areas and to have access to all school services and to participate in extra-curricular activities.

  • Acts as interpreter for deaf and hard of hearing students, regular student(s) / teacher(s) in a normal classroom setting
  • Carries the cultural interpretation of ideas and messages across the boundaries of the deaf and hard of hearing community and that of the spoken language community
  • Provides interpreting services for hearing impaired student(s) / regular student(s) / teacher(s) at various school events, assemblies, school masses, school plays, sports teams, student council, retreats, meetings, appointments, interviews, etc.
  • Carries out preparation for participation in classroom, special meetings, events, etc. such as meeting with teacher(s) to know what the goal is / discuss lesson plans, reading / reviewing course materials, attending planning / rehearsal sessions
  • Carries out cross-cultural mediation and bimodal communication
  • Instructs the school staff and students about the role of the interpreter by giving workshops, handouts and conducting role plays
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • NOTE : All applicants must be practicing Roman Catholics verified through a pastoral recommendation from a Roman Catholic Parish Priest
