At The Salvation Army Mountberry Adult Day Service, the Program Assistant is accountable to the Business Services Manager to provide excellent personal care to clients.
Primary functions include providing care according to the established client care plan including all components of activities of daily living and supporting participation in recreational and therapeutic activities.
The Program Assistant is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with the Salvation Army’s core values, ensure client safety, and demonstrate customer service excellence while responsible for planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and services provided to the clients.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
General Strategy :
- Provides for personal care in accordance with established policy, the client plan of care and within the scope of practice of a PSW.
- Contributes to and follows a plan of care to meet clients’ assessed needs.
- Is responsible for maintaining accurate and complete records of personal care delivered.
- Demonstrates a professional working knowledge of all equipment used in the delivery of nursing care.
- Follows all corporate policies and procedures.
- Seeks direction from the Business Services Manager when client need exceeds experience or scope of practice.
- Observes, reports, records resident conditions and follows care plans.
- Assists in maintaining an environment appropriate to meet clients’ individualized needs.
Essential Duties : Toileting
Toileting
- provides thorough peri care following elimination of urine or feces.
- follows toileting schedule as per care plan responds promptly to requests for toileting or change of incontinence products to prevent skin breakdown.
- Completes all related documentation.
Nutrition
- Feeds as necessary considering clients’ preferences and diet restrictions.
- Provides a safe and pleasant dining experience.
- Assists clients as necessary with individually wrapped portions of food, peeling oranges, eggs in shells, cutting meat, etc.
Program Activities
- May conduct and assist with planned programs in response to individual and group needs and interests.
- Assist with the preparation of the program’s physical environment and maintenance of the activity area.
- Contribute to the development, coordination of annual strategic long-range programs and fundraising initiatives.
- Complete and submit incident reports.
- May be required to provide activity to seniors in a virtual format (Zoom, Teams or other).
Leadership :
- Promotes positive work environment and teamwork by following the Mountberry Adult Day Service’s policies and procedures.
- Puts clients’ needs and safety first.
- Perform other duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
- This is a temporary full time position with a start date of June 17, 2024 to August 30, 2024.
- The work week is Monday to Friday 7 hours per day with a one half hour paid lunch break.
- Hours of work are from 8 : 30 am to 3 : 30 pm but may vary in order to meet program requirements.
- Shifts may be scheduled at either program location.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS :
- PSW Certification or Social Services Diploma or equivalent.
- Current Gentle Persuasive Approach training.
- Current First Aid & CPR Certification.
- Current Safe Food Handling Certification.
- Montessori for Dementia Care certificate would be an asset.
- U-First Training would be an asset.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE :
- Minimum of one (1) year of prior work experience working with cognitively impaired / frail elderly populations.
- Previous experience conducting craft, music, art, fitness, etc., skills.
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES :
- Proficiency in all Microsoft Office suite of products.
- Demonstrate effective working relationships within a team environment and work collaboratively with all staff and volunteers.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English.
- Demonstrate leadership skills and strong oral and written communication skills.
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exercise good judgment,
- Self-motivated and disciplined,
- Communicate in a sensitive and compassionate manner.
- A good listener with a genuine concern for the client / participant. Be able to offer sound advice that can meet the client / participant’s expectations.
- Participate in mandatory orientation training, departmental staff meetings, on-going professional development and training.
- Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
- Ensure all certifications are maintained as required.
- Represent the organization in a positive, professional and engaging manner.
- Work in compliance with the OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures,
- Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
- Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License, personal vehicle required and insurance, current copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
- Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.
e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
