The Opportunity
RVS invites applications for a full-time (35 hrs / wk) Manager of Accounting position starting immediately. The Manager of Accounting supervises and directs all aspects of the Accounting function within the Finance department to ensure the accurate and timely preparation and analysis of all facets of Rocky View Schools’ (RVS’) financial operations including accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial reporting, and government compliance.
Responsibilities Include
- Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the safe operation of the Finance department and related Accounting service
- Contributes to the annual Finance Department Work Plan to help set individual, Accounting, and Finance Department goals that are aligned with the Finance Department and Division’s strategic plan
- Trains, supervises, evaluates and mentors Finance department employees to ensure the successful growth and development of the department
- Assists in developing and implementing new internal processes and cross-training staff to enhance and streamline the workflow of the Finance department
- Oversees Accounting operations including the Division’s cash, accounts receivable, and accounts payable transactions, journal entries, and payment runs to ensure transactions are processed accurately and within internal and external deadlines
- Provides guidance regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions
- Prepares, directs, and oversees the completion of month and year-end financial reporting activities including account reconciliations and adjustments, supporting working papers, trial balance review, and statement preparation
- Prepares and oversees the preparation and submission of official charitable donation receipts, restricted funding reporting, and government filings such as GST, excise tax rebate, vendor withholding taxes, T4As, and annual charity return
- Prepares and supports in the review and coordination of the annual government reporting entity (GRE) and annual audited financial statements
- Prepares and Reports on the Division’s monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with public sector accounting standards and Alberta government guidelines
- Coordinates and works directly with the external auditors to provide required information for the annual external financial statement audit
- Supports the development and monitoring of financial-related internal controls, processes, and Administrative Procedures for the Division
- Works collaboratively with RVS staff to share information and develop / streamline internal processes to support overall division goals and objectives
Education / Experience
Post-secondary degree in Business or a related fieldCurrent Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation5 or more years of work experience post-qualification3 to 5 years’ of work experience in a supervisory or management rolePrevious experience within a school division or public sector employer is considered an assetKnowledge & Skills
Demonstrated ability taking a hands-on approach leading a small team, positively impacting both strategic and day-to-day initiativesAdvanced knowledge of Public Sector Accounting StandardsExcellent organizational, prioritization, and time management skillsExcellent written and verbal communication skillsAbility to successfully work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervisionProven ability to establish collaborative working relationships with internal and external clientsAbility to think critically and deal with changing priorities in a fast-paced environmentProfessional skepticism and awareness of the potential for fraud and diligence in following prescribed procedures, policies and goals of the departmentProficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other similar web-based applications including various accounting softwareRocky View Schools Benefits
