Special Education Teacher
Job Description :
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Special Education Teacher who is passionate about fostering a supportive and effective learning environment for students with diverse needs.
This role demands a specialist with a strong understanding of neurodivergence and the Ontario curriculum, equipped to handle one-on-one teaching and the creation and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
Responsibilities :
- Develop and implement IEPs and write report cards for students with special educational needs, covering all curriculum subjects.
- Provide extensive one-on-one instruction to ensure educational objectives are met.
- Manage behavioral classrooms effectively, employing high-level expertise in de-escalation techniques and ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) modalities.
- Work collaboratively with staff, parents, and other professionals to enhance student learning and well-being.
- Track and report on student progress, aiming for high-impact results and continuous improvement.
- Support the inclusion of First Nations youth and integrate culturally responsive practices.
- Proven track record of writing Jordan Principle applications and helping individual families with JP submissions
Required Qualifications
- OCT (Ontario College of Teachers) certification is mandatory.
- Bachelor of Education and Masters Degree
- Minimum of five years of teaching experience in special education autism classroom.
- Special Education Qualification - Part Three completed with focus on Autism and ADHD
- At least five years of experience teaching in a Grade 5 classroom as homeroom teacher.
- Proven track record in managing behavioral challenges from strength based approach
- Demonstrated ability in developing and executing effective IEPs.
- Strong background in ABA methodologies including ABA certification.
- Experience working with neurodiverse populations and substantial knowledge of related training and support strategies.
- Preferred : Experience working with First Nations youth.
- Proven track record creating effective alternative programs for youth with exceptionalities
- Excellent understanding of literacy practices and the science of reading training and certification.
- Reading Specialist certification is mandatory.
- Strong music education background is an asset
- Physical Education training in junior grade curriculum is a definite plus.
- Mental health training for youth with trauma required. Certification mandatory
