As a Business Strategist, you will support the management and coordination of corporate governance by developing service policy, leading policy review programs, directing policy reviews, establishing governance frameworks and developing approaches to improve governance practices in the organization. You will also provide key leadership and support on the development and implementation of departmental improvement initiatives and departmental / service business planning, budgeting and risk related activities. You will support and implement corporate strategic initiatives within the department. Primary duties include :

  • Manage the policy review program to cyclically review policies in addition to providing training and communications about the program.
  • Review and edit new and amended policies. Work with service teams to assess policy needs, help clarify policy objectives, craft policy statements and create implementation plans.
  • Contribute to achieving the objectives of the service governance and policy review program which aims to ensure policies are synergistic, aligned with organizational strategic objectives and free from policy barriers for Calgarians and businesses.
  • Coordinate the development of four-year service plans and budgets for the department and manage associated accountability reporting and enterprise risk management reporting.
  • Provide updates and recommendations to the General Manager on business planning, budgeting, risk, and corporate reporting for all business units in the department.
  • Participate in projects led by the Service excellence group which could include leading departmental teams and managing projects to deliver on business improvement initiatives or accomplish organizational and Council strategic direction.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Business, Management, Commerce, Political Sciences, Public Administration, Public Policy or related area.
  • At least 5 years of experience in at least 2 of the following areas; strategy, policy and program development, governance, compliance management, risk management or performance measurement.
  • An understanding of municipal governance structure and operations.
  • Experience writing policies or reports will be considered assets.
  • Experience with project management facilitation or client negotiation will be considered assets.
  • Intermediate level proficiency in MS Word, Excel or a working knowledge of Content Server will be considered assets.
  • Success in this position requires well-developed research, analytical and problem-solving skills as well as strong communication skills.
  • Success in this position also requires facilitation skills and political acumen with the ability to influence others and build consensus.
