Corrections Caseworker at The Salvation Army in Canada
Overview
The Corrections Caseworker is responsible for performing casework in support of persons serving parole at the St Catharines Booth Centre. The focus is to help clients complete their parole and be reintegrated into the community.
Accountabilities / Responsibilities
- Participate in Admissions Committee Meetings to review Community Assessments and prepare minutes.
- Prepare case management plans and sign out files for new arrivals.
- Conduct intakes with new arrivals : complete intake forms, review house rules, inventory belongings, give a facility tour, admit the resident to a dorm, and discuss release plans.
- Develop and implement case management for assigned clients; assist clients in establishing goals, monitor progress, and prepare discharge plans.
- Maintain accurate case files and documentation; complete reports required by funders and The Salvation Army (including OMS).
- Facilitate program delivery, including one-on-one sessions and group activities.
- Maintain caseload with regular sessions and thorough record-keeping as required by policy.
- Conduct interviews with applicants at the local Detention Centre and other federal institutions when necessary.
- Complete daily activity records and psycho-social assessments; write progress summaries and assist with job search inquiries as needed.
- Liaise with Correctional Service Canada staff and participate in case conferences with clients and parole officers; complete incident reports when necessary.
- Attend disciplinary interviews as required and coordinate with other social service agencies for client referrals.
- Supervise residents to ensure adherence to house rules and parole conditions; maintain client confidentiality and develop rapport with clients.
- Provide individual counselling and support clients in their reintegration process; update listings and complete weekend passes when necessary.
- Conduct rounds of the CRF Unit, perform room searches with another staff member when there are grounds to believe contraband may be present, and log information in official registers and OMS.
- Manage mail, ship urinalysis tests to the assigned lab, and record monthly statistics as required.
- Respond to crisis situations using de-escalation techniques and coordinate with emergency personnel if needed.
- Perform other duties as required.
Working Conditions
Full-time position, 40 hours weekly. Schedule may vary; some weekend and evening work may be required.May deal with angry or verbally abusive clients.Education, Qualifications & Certifications
College Diploma in Social Services / Corrections or equivalent combination of education and life experience with marginalized individuals.Completion of Non-Violence Crisis Intervention Training or willingness to obtain.Current First Aid and CPR or willingness to obtain.Training in Naloxone administration and Mental Health First Aid is an asset.Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license and a satisfactory driver’s abstract as required.Provide an original Criminal Records Check with vulnerable sector screening (CRC-VSS); note that enhanced reliability screening may be required for Corrections Canada.Experience & Skills
Minimum of one (1) year of related frontline experience in a correctional or social service setting.Strong ability to work independently and with diverse populations; sound judgment and confidentiality.Knowledge of housing issues, mental health and addictions support systems, and homelessness-related challenges in the Niagara region.Proficiency with word processing and software (Windows, Microsoft Office, Excel); willingness to learn program software such as HIFIS and MED e-care.Excellent communication skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks with attention to detail.Compensation
The target hiring range is $21.83 to $27.29 per hour, with a maximum of $32.75 per hour. Placement within the range will reflect market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications.
