Summary of responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Community Withdrawal Management Services, the Addiction Counsellor works collaboratively with individuals identified as being at risk for or as experiencing addiction or substance use issues, and possibly concurrent mental health problems that affect their functioning in some areas such as at home, school / work, and / or in the community.
Requirements of the job
- College diploma in Human Services Field
- Strong counselling and group facilitation skills in the area of addiction and experience working with youth 16 and over.
- Demonstrated knowledge of harm reduction principles and practices, including safer use education, relapse prevention, overdose awareness, and client-centered, non-judgmental care
- Demonstrated assessment, case formulation, and treatment planning skills
- Experience utilizing a variety of counselling and psychotherapeutic interventions in both individual and group formats, including structured / prescriptive programming, problem-solving approaches, emotional regulation strategies, anxiety and stress management, social skills development, life skills development, milieu therapy, crisis intervention, and management of acute situations
- Understanding of the etiological factors contributing to substance use disorders and mental health challenges
- Experience planning and delivering community education and outreach presentations related to substance use, mental health, harm reduction, and available services.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with community partners and as part of an interdisciplinary team
- Ability to work independently
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Good computer and presentation skills
- Certified in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention – Abridged
- Demonstrated regular, punctual attendance
- Functional level in both official languages (oral and written in English; oral in French) – and testing completed
- Minimal 3 years’ experience in Addiction counselling and 1 year experience in Mental health
- Minimal 2 years’ experience in group facilitation
- Ability to be organized and autonomous, and have good team-work capabilities
