You will be working with some of North America's leading life science organizations - and adding to our impressive line-up of start-ups including BlueRock Therapeutics, Trillium Therapeutics, Adela Bio Inc.

Treadwell Therapeutics, AvroBio, and more. These companies, first incubated within UHN, are among many others that have collectively injected more than $5 billion into the economy.

Hundreds of contracts accelerating research and commercialization partnerships are stewarded by Commercialization at UHN every year, helping bring research that much closer to patient impact.

These include contracts related to the exchange of biomaterials and other enabling tools via Data and Material Transfer Agreements (D / MTAs), academic Collaboration Agreements, and other Research and Commercial Agreements.

While some of these relationships involve academic collaborations with our UHN researchers and clinicians, most involve corporate third-parties such as pharmaceutical and medical device companies, or government agencies.

It is imperative that appropriate legal agreements are in place to govern these relationships as well as to manage and mitigate risk to UHN and UHN patient participants.

Position Summary / Duties

The Data, Digital and AI commercialization portfolio at UHN represents one of our fastest growing commercialization portfolios.

The concentration of world-class AI scientists, researchers, and clinicians, supported by state-of-the art infrastructure within UHN represents one of the world's largest and as yet largely untapped opportunities for commercialization.

Indeed, many new inventions at UHN now engage AI in some way, from AI algorithms used to augment diagnostic capacity for identifying cancer biomarkers in the blood, to triaging patients for specialized cardiac treatment, to a host of other novel and emerging applications across the healthcare spectrum.

UHN has recently initiated a number of high-profile programs and partnerships in this space, including an international data sharing partnership platform created together with key world class health-research institutions in the US, Middle East and beyond, as well as the creation of a new AI Hub that leverages a close strategic relationship with Toronto's Vector Institute.

The potential to capitalize on these technologies and partnership is still emerging, and Commercialization at UHN needs a true visionary to lead the charge!

In this role, you will continue to develop UHN's commercialization strategy around Data, Digital and AI to foster and harness commercial opportunity for UHN's uniquely competitive collection of digital assets, including patient derived data, AI-related algorithms, and other digital and software tools;

you will then lead strategic execution of these towards the right commercial opportunities, not just within Canada, but globally.

To achieve this mandate, you will work closely with the best clinical, research and IT teams in North America, in coordination with members of the Commercialization at UHN licensing team to identify novel opportunities across all UHN research and clinical areas.

This will include close interaction with AI researchers and capabilities across the organization.

You will also work closely with our IP, legal and data-governance groups to protect and execute on high-profile commercial relationships, whether they be sponsored collaborations, licensing and risk-share opportunities with industry partners, or the creation of spin-off companies, to maximize return on UHN assets and impact to patients.

  • In order to succeed as the institutional owner of this rapidly accelerating and high-profile portfolio, you will be an experienced digital technology business development professional who brings a demonstrable track record of success in closing R&D and commercialization agreements, including software and related intellectual property licensing deals;
  • you will possess a deep network of private sector, investment and venture connections; you will have demonstrated a career progression suggestive of a passion for the field and application to health-care;

Qualifications

Education :

  • At minimum, completion of a Master's degree program or recognized equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technologies, and / or a specialization in the application of Digital Technologies to Life Sciences or Medical Technology.
  • PhD or MBA preferred; JD is an asset.

Experience :

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant business experience or equivalent.
  • Business Development and or Licensing experience working in digital technology development related to pharmaceutical, biotech, technology transfer, venture capital or related environment required.
  • A demonstrable multi-year track record of success in leading the negotiation of licensing and / or significant ($>

1M value) partnership deals is required.

  • Experience launching and leading start-up technology companies (including sourcing seed and venture capital funding and divestments) would be an asset.
  • Industry experience and / or scientific background in a medical research area relevant to UHN's research mandate would be an asset.
  • Working knowledge of digital privacy laws and regulatory frameworks in Canada and the US as may be relevant to commercialization of digital health technologies is required.
  • Familiarity and comfort working closely with legal professionals to draft and negotiate agreements would be an asset.

Professional Affiliations / Memberships :

Affiliation with biomedical research or other relevant associations would be an asset.

Leadership / Additional Skills :

  • Strong capacity for understanding and evaluating detailed legal agreements required.
  • Good knowledge of intellectual property protection required.
  • Very good knowledge of licensing practice required.
  • Excellent knowledge of biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and / or venture capital markets required.
  • Strong presentation skills required.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize while working under tight deadlines is required.
  • Self-starter with a demonstrated history of taking initiatives is required.
  • Ability and comfort communicating to a range of stakeholders, from researchers to CEO's, from a business and science perspective is required.
