Description :

The joint Department of Medicine at the University Health Network (UHN) and Sinai Health System (SHS), affiliated with the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, are seeking to recruit a visionary Hepatologist to lead the UHN-SHS Hepatology section in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

The successful candidate must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto.

This Section Head position is for a 5-year term, renewable once following a successful review. Effective start date of appointment is July 1, 2024, or to be negotiated.

The successful candidate will lead a large academically successful and diverse Hepatology Section, based at the Toronto Center of Liver Disease (TCLD) in the Toronto General Hospital, in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology across two dynamic and innovative hospital systems.

The Division has 33 full time faculty members across SHS and UHN, with 15 hepatologists in the Section, who lead diverse and comprehensive tertiary programs.

The clinical division spans 3 separate acute care sites (UHN -Toronto General Hospital, UHN-Toronto Western Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital) and 2 separate rehabilitation sites (Toronto Rehab and Bridgepoint).

The Division has active clinical and academic programs in many areas of gastroenterology and hepatology including viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, fatty liver disease, portal hypertension, hepatocellular carcinoma and liver transplantation as well as IBD, nutrition, pancreatic cancer, neurogastroenterology and motility.

The TCLD has a large and internationally recognized fellowship program, training hepatologists in clinical management and clinical research.

Fellows also support inpatient and outpatient clinical responsibilities. Toronto is Canada's largest city, and a center for education, healthcare, business, finance, technology, entertainment and culture.

The successful applicant is a visionary leader with sophisticated interpersonal skills, leadership or equivalent work-related / lived experience and a track record of achievement in one or more of research, education, creative professional activity, system design, quality and safety, equity and diversity and / or medical leadership.

The Section Head will lead in excellence inequitable, patient-centered care and quality and safety programs, oversee Section Recruitment to optimize clinical care and the academic agenda, and advance an academic strategic plan and fundraising program.

They will bridge diverse groups, strengthen capacity across their research programs, collaborate with Divisions and Departments in other University of Toronto Teaching Hospitals, and work with the University Division Director to support city-wide excellence in Hepatology care, ensure strong mentorship to trainees and faculty at all stages of their careers, leading with empathy and compassion in the advancement of the Section and patient care.

They will demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of their work and will uphold equity as a central component of high-quality patient care.

The successful candidate will report to the Division Head of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and through them, the Physicians in Chief at both SHS and UHN.

At UHN and SHS, the successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Program Medical Director or Senior Director respectively, and operations administrative leadership to continue to develop leading academic and clinical programs in the Section of Hepatology in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as part of the Department of Medicine and Medicine Program.

The successful candidate must hold MD, Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology qualifications and have significant experience in Hepatology Academic Practice and a track record of progressive leadership success.

They must have or be eligible for licensure in Ontario. Academic rank, salary and contractual arrangements will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

Compensation will be negotiated and will be highly competitive with the usual income range for an academic internist in the Province of Ontario.
