About the role :
The Senior Property Accountant will manage the financial operations of a diverse portfolio of Commercial Properties in Eastern and Western Canada.
Main responsibilities :
- Analyze and interpret lease agreements to determine billing obligations, recoverable expenses, and rent escalations.
- Process and enter leases in the accounting software.
- Work closely with property managers and the leasing team to stay up to date on lease amendments, renewals, and tenant changes.
- Complete month-end and year-end close processes by preparing and reviewing journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
- Variance analysis and explanations.
- Calculate and prepare 13th invoice provisions as part of the month-end close.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure all financial transactions are properly recorded
- Coordinate with internal departments to gather and verify financial information.
- Participate and assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and assist in implementing best practices in accounting operations
- Mentor and supervise the accounting technicians and approve all their daily tasks such as cash receipts, bank reconciliations, obtaining and coding of utility invoices, chargebacks amongst others.
- Assist in any and all other projects.
Requirements
- College-level degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Minimum 3+ years of property accounting experience, specifically with commercial real estate.
- Strong understanding of lease administration and real estate accounting principles (e.g., CAM, straight-line rent, recoveries).
- Proficiency in Yardi, MRI, or similar property management/accounting software.
- Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with financial reporting tools.
- Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
