Job description

Position Overview

Kiewit Construction is seeking a dynamic and experienced Indigenous Relations Liaison to strengthen and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities across Western Canada for our infrastructure, energy, and mining projects. You will focus on meaningful engagement, collaboration, and partnership-building with Indigenous businesses and groups as Kiewit builds critical infrastructure in Western Canada. Candidate must possess a strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and protocols, as well as experience working with Indigenous communities in a liaison or engagement capacity.

District Overview

Kiewit Energy Canada, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, is a major industrial contractor involved in oil sands processing, refinery expansions, gas plant expansions, co-generation facilities, and nuclear construction projects.

Location

Burnaby, BC, or Calgary, AB.RP1


This position requires regular travel to communities across Western Canada, including overnight or multi-day trips. Must be willing to stay in remote communities and camps as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities, leadership, and stakeholders.
  • Act as a key point of contact between Kiewit and Indigenous groups, ensuring open and transparent communication.
  • Support the development and implementation of Indigenous engagement strategies for projects across Western Canada.
  • Planning, organizing, and facilitating a range of events in communities across Western Canada.
  • Work closely with project teams to integrate Indigenous perspectives into project planning and execution.
  • Facilitate meetings, consultations, and initiatives to promote collaboration and mutual understanding.
  • Assist in the negotiation and implementation of Indigenous agreements, partnerships, and employment/training initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for Indigenous participation in procurement, workforce development, and economic inclusion.
  • Facilitating delivery of Indigenous cultural sensitivity and/or awareness training for the project.
  • Participating in community activities that promote cross-cultural engagement and inclusion of Indigenous values.
  • Promoting local Indigenous values and fostering a positive workplace culture that aligns with these values.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant Indigenous rights, government regulations, and project commitments.
  • Undertaking tracking and reporting in relation to the implementation of the Indigenous Participation Plan.
  • Updating the Indigenous Participation Plan in collaboration with Indigenous communities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Indigenous Relations, geography, archeology, anthropology, political science, public administration, forestry, natural resources, regional planning, business administration or related field.
  • Minimum of five years recent demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with Indigenous groups and working with Indigenous groups to provide contracting, employment and/or training opportunities.
  • Understanding of construction, infrastructure, or resource development industries is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous governance structures, treaties, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous cultures, rights, history, and current affairs in British Columbia.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, leadership, and organizations.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience working on infrastructure, energy, or mining projects in Western Canada.
  • Ability to travel extensively throughout Western Canada, sometimes to remote locations.
  • Able to use Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Power Point, and Outlook. #LI-GH
Other Requirements:

  • Perform work safely and effectively. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies.
  • Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.
  • May work at various different locations and conditions may vary
Compensation: $80,000 - 110,000
  • Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location
