Job description

The Mullings Group is proud to partner with our client, Longview Farms, in the search for a General Manager to join their team in Victoria. The General Manager is a senior leadership role responsible for directing all operational, commercial, and strategic functions of Vancouver Island’s largest certified organic vegetable farm. This is an opportunity to lead a mission-driven agricultural operation where building trust, developing people, and fostering collaborative relationships are as critical as driving financial performance and operational excellence.

The GM will oversee production planning, team leadership across permanent and seasonal staff, sales and market development, financial management, and compliance with organic certification standards (PACS, Canada GAP). The ideal candidate is a confident business leader with authentic people skills who listens as well as they lead, can navigate complexity with integrity and sound judgment, and thrives in a hands-on environment where strategic thinking meets the realities of farming on some of BC’s most productive land.

The Organization

Longview Farms is Vancouver Island’s largest PACS-certified organic vegetable operation, cultivating over 165+ acres in Central Saanich on some of BC’s most productive farmland. The farm grows a diverse range of certified organic fruits and vegetables, alongside conventional daffodils, bulbs, pumpkins, and hay. Committed to strengthening local food security, Longview supplies Vancouver Island and mainland BC retailers, operates a farm stand, and sells at regional farmers’ markets, continuously expanding production while maintaining sustainable practices and deep community roots.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic plans for the farm, aligning with overall organizational goals.
  • Review current organizational structure and roles to ensure alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Lead all business and commercial efforts for the farm.
  • Collaborate with unit leads to formulate annual farm production plans, encompassing sales forecasts, budgets, CAPEX requirements, and cash flow projections.
  • Monitor financial performance, analyze variances, and implement cost-control measures.
  • Identify opportunities for diversification, expansion, or new market penetration.
  • Support farm administration, as needed, by organizing and scheduling meetings, drafting correspondence, managing client / customer relations, maintaining calendars, and generating sales reports.
  • Assist in all aspects of farm resourcing, including permanent and seasonal domestic hiring and oversight of the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SAWP).
  • Collaborate on sales and marketing efforts, establishing relationships with retail and wholesale buyers, disseminating regular product availability newsletters, making sales calls, conducting product research, understanding new and existing customer wants and needs, analyzing supply and demand, setting prices, and ensuring timely delivery of high-quality products.
  • Support, as needed, communications with buyers on inventory and availability.
  • Support operational efforts focused on repairs, maintenance, and replacement of farm equipment and facilities, including housing for SAWP workers.
  • Foster a positive work environment and ensure effective communication within the team.
  • Support ongoing Health and Safety efforts to ensure adherence to pertinent regulations and standards.
  • Support, as needed, ongoing efforts to meet and secure organic and food safety certifications from granting bodies such as Canada GAP and PACS.
  • Explore and adopt new technologies to enhance farm efficiency and productivity.
  • Implement precision farming techniques and data-driven decision-making.
  • Identify and assess potential risks to the farm, including weather-related risks and market fluctuations.
  • Coordinate with the Grower to develop and implement risk mitigation strategies, such as crop insurance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, agriculture, or other related field. Advanced degrees are often preferred.
  • 5+ years of management and leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of agricultural technology, agribusiness, or a related field considered an asset.
  • Strong strategic thinking, implementation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication abilities, including strategic documents, reporting, issuing instructions and providing follow-up, monitoring, and correction as necessary.
  • Proficient in both written and spoken Spanish considered an asset.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Capable of working collaboratively with individuals at various organizational levels and with diverse levels of experience.
  • Ability to manage and maintain private and confidential information with a high degree of professionalism.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as seasonally required.
