Summary
The Structural CAD Designer is part of a team providing engineering services to large and small projects. The role is responsible for the production of structural 3D models and 2D drawings in accordance with project requirements under the supervision of the Lead Structural CAD Designer.
The successful candidate will participate in a wide range of projects covering structures such as building foundations, equipment foundations, building steel framing, and designs of various other structures for hydropower, mining, and industrial settings.
Activities include site investigation and structural steel and concrete modeling and drafting for both front end planning and the detailed engineering phase for multi-discipline projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Lead Structural CAD Designer with the delivery of project requirements as they relate to scope, quantities, cost and schedule
- Carry out the preparation of contract drawings, record keeping and other statistical work
- Produce and maintain technical and engineering drawings using 2D and 3D CAD software as required
- Perform conceptual layout work
- Develop design details
- Check drawings prior to release
- Ensure coordination with designers / drafters and engineers within the discipline and with other disciplines
- Perform clash detection of models with other discipline models
- Participation in formal engineering review processes
- Verify onsite condition and dimensions relating to existing facilities
- Provide technical support to clients and junior designer / drafters
- Delegate duties to junior designer / drafters as needed and follow-up to ensure completion of such activities meet quality and regulatory standards
- Participate in design coordination with engineers and other disciplines in the development of complete drawing packages
- Conduct field investigations produce clear field reports with detailed sketches as required
Qualifications and Experience
- Civil / Structural College Advanced Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of five years of structural CAD design / drafting experience
- Proficient in the use of 2D and 3D structural CAD design / drawing software packages, including working experience with AutoCAD, Revit and Civil 3D.
Experience with BIM coordination and with Bentley MicroStation are considered assets
- Experience within a large project, multi-disciplinary EPCM environment
- Knowledge of industry or regulatory standards, regulations and codes pertinent to structural design in Ontario
- Skilled at developing detailed design elements using information from various sources which may include site studies, vendor drawings, catalog data, engineering sketches, reference drawings and input from other disciplines
- Proven ability to maintain positive relationships with clients, team members, and extra-departmental individuals in order to maximize cooperation and deliverables
