Indigenous Cultural Youth Care Worker (Bachelor's)
Vancouver Coastal Health is seeking an Indigenous Cultural Youth Care Worker to join our team in Powell River, BC.
Responsibilities
- Provide support services to designated clients within the Youth Mental Health & Substance Use program, acting as a bridge between Western medicine and Indigenous culture.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to develop, implement, and adjust treatment plans using a salutogenic approach focused on health and wellbeing.
- Engage Indigenous Elders and traditional teachers to establish rapport and provide emotional and spiritual support through Indigenous traditions.
- Offer care through trauma‑informed practice, two‑eyed seeing, harm reduction, and a recovery‑oriented approach.
- Assist clients in developing life skills and healthy lifestyles, and lead or co‑lead social and cultural groups.
- Advocate for the use of community resources to facilitate transition to partnered services.
- Participate in interdisciplinary case conferences and meetings to address Indigenous youth mental health, substance use, and concurrent disorders.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Child and Youth Care or an equivalent health‑related discipline.At least 2 years of recent experience working with Indigenous youth or young adults with significant mental health, substance use, and trauma issues in an interdisciplinary health setting.Valid BC Driver’s Licence and access to a personal vehicle for business purposes.Preference will be given to individuals of Indigenous identity (First Nations, Inuit, or Métis) pursuant to Section 41 of the British Columbia Human Rights Code.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of recovery principles in mental health and substance use.Understanding of colonial policies and their impact on Indigenous Peoples.Familiarity with salutogenic health and wellness approaches.Knowledge of two‑eyed seeing and decolonizing health care practices.Experience with Indigenous cultural interventions, including ceremonial practices and land‑based healing.Understanding of behavioural, social, emotional, and psychiatric issues in youth.Experience with trauma‑informed practice, Indigenous / Holistic harm reduction, and recovery‑oriented care.Ability to engage with Indigenous peers, Elders, and Traditional Knowledge Keepers.Recognition of signs of clients at risk and knowledge of appropriate response protocols.Knowledge of community resources and other health‑care disciplines.Understanding of normal child and youth development.Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with diverse stakeholders.Time‑management and independent work skills in a high‑volume, high‑stress environment.Physical ability to perform job duties.The hours of work, including days off and work area, may be subject to change in accordance with operational requirements, the Collective Agreement, and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.
