Summer Student - IEHSD

The Regional Municipality of Durham is currently recruiting students for summer employment for 2026 in our Income, Employment and Homelessness Support Division (IEHSD).

The incumbent will:
- Assist with approvals by consulting with Case Coordinators to prepare evidence and notes to support the action required for eligibility approvals
- Provide client support by: responding to client inquiries, providing information regarding appointments, outstanding information and community resources, promoting initiative and benefits available to clients, gathering all necessary information/facts from the client, reviewing policies if applicable and proposing next steps to the Case Coordinator/Supervisor for approval, keeping clients informed and apprised of next steps, promoting and registering clients for MyBenefits, assisting with Direct Bank Deposit (DBD) or Reloadable Payment Card (RPC), creating an email account
- Utilise Social Assistance Management System (SAMS) for various tasks - document all interactions with clients, extend Income Reporting Statements (IRS) waivers at the direction of the Case Coordinator, review tasks that are expiring and action, prepare evidence and notes, review and manage all other task notification, create Form 1 tasks, update information that does not affect eligibility, that is, personal information, notes, data entry tasks.
- Assist with managing the electronic document management inbox, maintaining files with updated documents, printing letters, forms and packages
- Process and complete cards, vouchers, Social Investment Fund (SIF) requests, bus tickets
- Assist with reviewing IRS query and suspended cases and contact clients to advise of next steps

The successful applicant will possess:
- Experience working with people in community in various settings
- Experience in a customer service environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Organizational and time management skills
- The ability to assess clients' situations and apply discretion in administering additional assistance within guidelines
- Computer literacy - Excel Word, Outlook
- A commitment to treating all clients and colleagues with dignity, respect, and cultural sensitivity.
- A demonstrated willingness to adapt services to meet diverse needs

Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary program related to Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, Mental Health or related disciplines and returning to school in September 2026

Most positions are available from the beginning of May through to the end of August.

Student - Technical

- Wage: $20.54 to $22.82 per hour

Conditions of Employment

Prior to the start date, the successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check dated within two (2) months from date of hire. Proof of education, qualifications and any other job bona fide requirements will also be collected.
