The Department of Laboratory Medicine, Pathology and Medical Genetics of Island Health, is seeking a Medical Biochemist or Clinical Chemist.
This fulltime position is primarily based in Victoria, BC.
The Medical Biochemistry Laboratory Service in Island Health consists of a network of three major hospital-based laboratories, five community hospitals and smaller satellite facilities that together serve an island population of more than ,.
The service is defined by core labs and supporting analytical procedures in the areas of special chemistry, endocrinology, immunology, toxicology and therapeutic drug monitoring services.
The successful physician or clinical chemist will be team oriented and join 2.5 other Medical Biochemists and a 1.0 Clinical Chemist in providing diagnostic laboratory oversight and participate fully in the island-wide routine and special chemistry services, teaching rounds, committee work, administrative tasks and consultations to clinicians in all areas relating to diagnosis, management and therapeutic choices.
A demonstrated high level of expertise and recent experience in Medical Biochemistry with regard to medical and technical leadership in a regional model including quality assurance, utilization management and other stewardship activities are desirable.
Experience in dynamic testing is an asset. A specific interest and expertise in clinical mass spectrometry would be most desirable.
Other interest areas include data analytics and IT clinical decision support implementation.
Travel between sites to provide facility and physician in-services and staff support is expected. Participation in provincial Laboratory Agency committee and operation planning work is anticipated.
Vancouver Island is home to the Island Medical Program, a satellite of the University of British Columbia and there will be an opportunity for faculty appointment, academic program delivery and clinical research for the appropriate candidate.
Candidates must hold Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada specialty certification in Medical Biochemistry or General Pathology and have full, unrestricted license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons British Columbia or have a PhD degree and be certified (or eligible for certification) in Clinical Chemistry by the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (CACB) and / or American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC).
