Detailed Overview
Reporting administratively to the Coordinator, Mental Health and clinically to the Professional Practice Chief – Social Work, the Social Worker, Inpatient Psychiatry provides psychosocial assessment and therapeutic clinical counseling services to clients (patients / families) in psychiatry using a variety of modalities and in accordance with professional standards and clinical policies and practices. The role participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team in care planning, discharge planning, resource linkage, and education from a Social Work perspective, and as a member of local committees and planning bodies as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Conduct psychosocial assessments through focused interviews, collateral information collection, and data interpretation within the client system contextual framework.
- Provide supportive counseling, identify strengths and challenges, offer interventions that promote psychosocial / emotional wellbeing, and develop a plan of care with treatment goals and referrals as needed.
- Educate and consult clients and health‑care professionals on social work practice in psychiatric settings, including high‑risk factors, adaptation to illness, trauma and stress management, bereavement, chemical dependency, community support services, and relevant legislation.
- Maintain client records by documenting assessments, progress notes, and reports according to established standards, policies, and procedures.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team in client care planning, identify clients needing social work intervention through daily rounds or referrals, and facilitate care conferences.
- Act as a liaison between the psychiatric unit and community agencies (Mental Health, Ministry of Employment & Income Assistance, Home Health Care, Ministry of Children & Family Development, Corrections, etc.).
- Accompany and transport patients to pre‑placement visits to residential facilities as required.
- Provide education about community resources, arrange referrals, and advocate on behalf of clients / families to access appropriate services.
- Promote ongoing quality improvement by participating on local committees and planning bodies, engaging in program / practice evaluation, identifying improvement opportunities, and pursuing professional development.
- Maintain workload statistics in accordance with professional standards.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree of Social Work from an accredited school.One (1) year of recent, related experience.Current full registration with the BC College of Social Workers.Valid BC driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle for business‑related purposes.Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of psychosocial aspects of mental health issues.Familiarity with DSM‑IV criteria.Counseling skills, including brief solution‑focused therapy (individual / group), crisis intervention, motivational techniques, conflict resolution, and resource counseling.Ability to work effectively as a team member and establish a climate of trust and mutual respect.Knowledge of legislation applicable to social work in psychiatry, including the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent and Care Facility Admissions Act, Patients Property Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Adult Guardianship Act, and Child Family and Community Service Act.Strong verbal and written communication skills with clients / families, the health‑care team, and community agency personnel.Ability to organize and prioritize workload in a complex environment.Ability to operate related equipment.Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.About Fraser Health
