We are currently looking for a Senior Embedded Hardware Engineer to join our busy and growing manufacturing company. GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY

Reporting directly to the VP of Product Development, the Senior Embedded Hardware Engineer will be participant of and oversee and provide guidance to the embedded design area. Will focus on the design and development of gas measurement electronic instruments and its testing equipment and software. With a focus on specific metrological and safety certifications and regulatory requirements of Romet electronic products for submission to Safety regulatory bodies for approvals under IEC-60079-1 / CSA 22.2. Will also support and cross train with other members of the team and any other related assigned projects. This position has no direct reports.

Key Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities :

  • Design Intrinsic safe, very low power (battery powered) digital and analog systems, conforming to applicable standards for use in hazardous location (Natural Gas)
  • Technical ownership for the hardware design; responsibilities include specification, design, development, test plan development, prototyping, design verification, product release, and manufacturing support
  • Plan and participate in the execution of safety and performance testing to satisfy applicable standards
  • Specify production, programming and test tools
  • Participate in design reviews with internal teams and suppliers
  • Lead various aspects of electronic product design throughout product development stages EVT, DVT, PVT
  • Schematic capture and PCB layout for analog and digital designs using Altium
  • Experience working with sensors (magnetic, temperature and pressure)
  • Contribute to product certification (such as FCC, UL, CE, CSA)
  • Identify, qualify, and source electronic components used in Bills of Materials (BOM)
  • Actively collaborate with other Hardware Engineers, Mechanical, Software Engineers, QA Engineers, and Manufacturing Engineers
  • Provide technical support to marketing, sales, and design partners throughout the product development and implementation process
  • Interaction with test labs for regulatory compliance as they relate to submissions for wireless, utility, and safety regulatory bodies
  • Maintains existing electronic designs to comply with the latest standards and address component obsolescence
  • All other projects and duties as assigned by the VP of Product Development
  • Skills and Qualifications :

  • Excellent problem solving, troubleshooting, and debugging skills
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Knowledge of common sensors and other typical control devices
  • Surface-mount soldering, rework, and board bring-up and debugging skills
  • Able to read mechanical drawings, and familiar with e-Drawings
  • Considers quality in all aspects of the job and respects procedures and norms
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, deadline focused work environment
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Educational / Experience Requirements :

  • Bachelor or Master of Science in Electrical and / or Electronics Engineering
  • 10-15 years experience in Electronics hardware design in as many areas as listed below :
  • Design of low power microprocessor-based and analog circuit design
  • Intrinsic Safe (IEC60079-11) electronic hardware development, experience with intrinsic safety calculations
  • Experience with CSA / IECEx / ATEX, FCC certification process
  • Working Knowledge in ATEX / IECEx zoning (Explosive atmospheres) and protection methods (Ex i, Ex e, Ex n, Ex d, Ex m, Ex p, etc.) IEC 60079 series
  • Sensor control components and systems
  • Experience in digital and analog design, PCB development, debugging, and verification is required
  • Proven track record of supporting and troubleshooting hardware issues both during development and production environments
  • Extensive experience in design validation with a focus on lab measurement techniques and test equipment
  • Ability to parse component datasheets and extract design and verification criteria
  • Highly experienced with circuit design, schematic capture, and PCB design using OrCAD and / or Altium Designer
  • Proven experience with debugging techniques for embedded systems using soldering and common electronics tools (e.g., logic analyzers, microcontroller debuggers, oscilloscopes, spectrum, and network analyzer).
  • Working experience with Jira and confluence
  • Experience with low-level embedded software development (embedded C), RTOS and real-time software principles
  • Environmental and reliability testing
  • Ability to develop and integrate hardware drivers for peripheral devices + protocols : SPI, I2C, USB, DMA, TCP / IP, UDP, DMA, UART, Bluetooth
  • Working experience with Wi-Fi, BLE, Cellular RF-modules is an asset
  • Previous Oil & Gas experience is considered an asset
  • Prior working experience utilities is an asset
