About Riverview Park and Zoo

Spanning over 55 acres of park area along the shores of the Otonabee River, Riverview Park and Zoo is proud to be Canada"s only FREE admission accredited zoo, open daily from 8 : 30 a.m. until dusk all year round. Our winter operating hours are now in effect, but it"s still a wonderful time to come visit the zoo! We offer 25 animal exhibits with more than 40 different species and over 150 animals calling us home .

We are passionate about the welfare of the animals in our care and are committed to being responsible stewards for the property and grounds we manage. We work to avidly pursue best practices, meet or exceed professional standards and to conduct our operations in an ethical and environmentally responsible manner.

About the role

The Animal Care student works with a team to provide care of over 48 species of animal including diet preparation, feeding, animal enrichment, exhibit cleaning, positive reinforcement training of selected species, assistance with animal health care and other animal duties.

This role works rotating weekend shifts from Labour Day until the first week of May. From the first week in May until Labour day, this position works a mix of 8 hour and 12 hour shifts, with a total of 32 hours per week. The compensation for this role starts at $17.55 per hour.

What you"ll do

  • Care, housekeeping and diet preparation and feeding of zoo animals
  • Knowledge of the biology, natural history and status of the Zoo collection
  • Delivery of educational, public relations and promotional activities including our "Meet the Keeper" and "Otter Feeding" programs
  • Awareness and understanding of the requirements for care, nutrition and enrichment for Riverview animals
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the purpose and role of zoos and the history of the Riverview Park & Zoo in the City of Peterborough

Qualifications

Skills :

  • Experience in animal care
  • Proficient in MS Office applications
  • Able to meet the physical demands of the position
  • Must be self motivated and require limited supervision
  • Must be willing to work in an environment that requires customer interaction
  • Demonstrated excellent safety record and attitude
  • First Aid / CPR considered an asset
  • Eligibility

  • Must be currently enrolled and returning to post-secondary education institution on a full-time basis
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada as a student
  • Be able to validate the above criteria by providing original documentation
  • Must have a G class driver"s license
  • Returning students will have eligibility to work a maximum of three (3) summer work terms
