Location : Leq : mel First Nation, Deroche, BC

Compensation : $25 to $29 / hour, depending on experience.

Leq : mel First Nation is located twenty-two kilometers east of Mission. LFN continues to assert our inherent rights of self-government over our Territory, which covers a vast area of the Lower Mainland. LFN has approximately eight hundred members and is governed by Chief and Council through a Custom Election Code. Applicants must have a demonstrated knowledge of Leq : mel culture and traditions, or a willingness to learn.

About the Role

Leq : mel First Nation is seeking a dedicated and motivated Emergency Management Coordinator to support and coordinate the communitys Emergency Management Program. This position plays a key operational role within the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and supports all phases of emergency management, including preparedness, planning, response, and recovery.

The Emergency Management Coordinator contributes to building community resilience to climate-related and other emergency risks and strengthening local emergency management capacity. In addition to emergency management responsibilities, this role provides project support within the Lands & Natural Resources Department and assists other departments during non-emergency periods where skills and capacity align.

When the Emergency Operations Centre is activated, the position may be assigned the role of EOC Director in accordance with the Emergency Operations Plan and delegated authority.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Emergency Management & Operations

  • Support and coordinate emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation activities.
  • Support readiness, activation, and operation of the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).
  • During emergencies, serve as EOC Director and coordinate response and recovery efforts with leadership, staff, and external partners.
  • Monitor emerging and seasonal risks (e.g., wildfire, flooding, extreme weather) and report concerns to management.
  • Maintain accurate records of emergency actions, decisions, expenditures, and resource use.

Planning, Preparedness & Risk Reduction

  • Support the development, maintenance, and updating of emergency plans, including the Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), Evacuation Plan, and Recovery Framework.
  • Maintain emergency contact lists, call-out procedures, and local resource inventories.
  • Participate in hazard briefings and information sessions with provincial and federal agencies.
  • Identify, apply for, and administer emergency management grants to support planning, training, exercises, equipment, and community preparedness.
  • Emergency Social Services & Community Support

  • Support the delivery of Emergency Social Services (ESS) in collaboration with partner agencies.
  • Develop and maintain a volunteer list and support volunteer coordination during exercises and emergency events.
  • Assist with community recovery efforts following emergencies.
  • Training, Exercises & Capacity Building

  • Coordinate and support emergency management training for staff, leadership, volunteers, and community members.
  • Plan and participate in emergency exercises (tabletop, functional, and other formats).
  • Support ongoing training to strengthen emergency management and EOC capacity.
  • Communications & Partnerships

  • Support emergency-related communications and public information as directed.
  • Assist with emergency notification systems (e.g., Connect Rocket).
  • Act as a key point of contact for emergency management partners and agencies.
  • Participate in regional, provincial, and inter-agency emergency management forums.
  • Project & Cross Departmental Support

  • Provide project support within the Lands & Natural Resources Department.
  • Assist other departments during non-emergency periods where skills align.
  • Support grant development, administration, and reporting for emergency management and related projects.
  • What Were Looking For

    Qualifications

    Required

  • Experience or strong aptitude in emergency management, public safety, project coordination, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and coordination skills, with the ability to convey ideas clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Understanding of First Nation Emergency Management best practices.
  • Ability to work effectively in time-sensitive and high-pressure environments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint) and ability to learn new systems.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Valid Drivers Abstract free of encumbrances.
  • Preferred

  • Post-secondary education or coursework in emergency management, public safety, planning, or a related field.
  • Experience working in an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities or local government.
  • Experience supporting policy-driven or compliance-based programs.
  • Work Schedule & Conditions

    Due to the nature of emergency management, work hours may change during emergency events or anticipated emergencies and may include extended or irregular hours.

    This is an office-based position with extended computer use and may require work in various weather conditions. Regular interaction with community members, staff, leadership, and external partners is expected. Occasional travel may be required.
