As Director, Corporate Planning, you will be at the heart of shaping Algonquin College’s financial future. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this pivotal role offers the opportunity to lead the development of the College’s operating and capital budgets, drive strategic financial planning, and influence decisions that affect the entire institution. You’ll collaborate with senior leadership to align financial resources with the College’s strategic and business plans, ensuring long‑term sustainability and fiscal integrity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and analysis to evaluate new projects and initiatives, identifying financial and institutional impacts and recommending actions.
  • Monitor financial performance of operations and capital projects, oversee variance analysis, and guide quarterly revenue and expenditure updates.
  • Stay current with updates from the Board of Governors, Executive Team, Budget Committee, and Ministry to ensure financial plans reflect evolving priorities and requirements.

Budget Administration

  • Collaborate with the CFO to develop annual operational and capital budget targets and oversee Finance department budget preparation.
  • Establish revenue and expenditure assumptions for the annual budget and five‑year pro forma for Executive Team approval.
  • Maintain the College’s five‑year Capital Investment Plan to support strategic and business planning.
  • Lead the preparation of all financial components of the annual budget, including instructions and templates.
  • Advise leadership on budget matters, review departmental requests, and recommend allocation changes to the CFO.
  • Support position planning in coordination with HR to align with strategic workforce goals.

  • Coordinate production of the Budget Book and related materials for Board approval and community communication.
  • Develop and maintain effective budgeting systems and models aligned with best practices and external funding frameworks.
  • Review and propose changes to budget model (such as Responsibility Centre Management (RCM)) allocations to ensure relevance and accuracy across academic and service areas.
  • Budget, Models, and Planning Systems

  • Oversee budgeting and financial planning systems to improve efficiency and effectiveness across College operations.
  • Analyze and enhance budgeting methods, tools, and procedures to support strategic financial decision‑making.
  • Develop and maintain forecasting and scenario models to accurately project financial outcomes.
  • Advance modeling tools to support medium‑ and long‑term financial planning and sustainability.
  • Collaboration and Support

  • Maintain contacts and build strong working relationships within the College, with Ministry officials, and senior finance officers at other colleges.
  • Support the Chief Financial Officer at meetings of the Audit and Risk Management Committee, and the Algonquin College Executive Team through attendance at meetings and by presenting budget related topics as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Minimum four (4) year bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • A Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) designation is required.
  • Education, training or coaching in lean management principles is required.
  • Master’s degree in business administration would be considered an asset.
  • Minimum nine (9) years of senior level experience including responsibility for annual budget development, preparation of Quarterly Financial Forecasts and other budget and scenario planning models.
