Job description

OVERVIEW

  • THIS IS A 1 YEAR CONTRACT POSITION

The Chief Powehouse Engineer is responsible for leading the powerhouse operation at the Toronto site. Including the safe, reliable and efficient operation of boilers, air compressors, water treatment and electrical generation; management of the powerhouse operating team and an emphasis on operational improvements through process and procedural changes and hardware upgrades. The role is located at the Redpath Toronto Sugar Refinery, the largest refinery in Canada and the most energy efficient refinery in North America.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage and lead the Powerhouse team.
  • Drive Redpath’s Utility services for high performance in safety, cost control. equipment reliability, housekeeping
  • Set and achieve Utility area KPI’s.
  • Maintain and develop operating procedures and support with effective training programs for powerhouse team
  • Oversee the coordination of all technical service providers, including bidding contracts and monitoring of quality control.
  • Analyze energy usage and demand information and implement operating strategies to reduce costs.
  • Manage maintenance and upgrades of equipment to improve reliability and efficiency of the Powerhouse equipment
  • Review existing operations and identify opportunities for improvement using sound engineering principles.
  • Troubleshooting of powerhouse equipment.
  • Responsible to manage site wide steam / condensate system performance
  • Responsible to manage site wide heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
  • Responsible to manage site wide pressure vessel and fire system compliance with Ontario regulatory and ASR group requirements.
  • WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Significant, recent related experience in power plant operation.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with high pressure boilers, steam turbines, electrical generation and water treatment.
  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Ontario First or Second Class Operating Engineer certificate is a must
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • Yes – team of 7 Engineers
  • ESSENTIAL CAPABILITIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES)

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively at all levels of an organization.
  • Experienced with the use of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel & PowerPoint.
  • Ability to confidently engage and coach operators with plant systems and expectations.
  • Demonstrated ability to challenge the status quo and be a change agent for operational improvements.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experienced with Steam and Power systems including : High pressure superheated production boilers Water treatment High pressure steam turbines Generators, switchgear & Power Breakers Synchronization controls & local Utility connections
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining regulatory and insurance requirements. TSSA pressure vessel and safety valve system code compliance Boiler operating code compliance Fuel storage and site use code compliance.
  • Able to apply sound engineering principles with plant system troubleshooting and / or improvement recommendations
  • Experience with low energy / high efficiency and heat recovery systems is preferred.
